Full job description
Coast, is building the smart financial infrastructure powering America's fleets. AI is fundamentally changing how fleets run their financial operations, and we're shaping the tools this new era requires. Founded in 2020, Coast has become the payments and expense management platform of choice for the 500,000 fleets and 40 million vehicles that keep the country moving by giving fleet owners and operators control, visibility, and trust over how their businesses spend. In an industry where complexity is the norm, we're building something simple yet opinionated and focused: software that field owners, managers, and workers actually want to use. Every member of our fully co-located team is a builder who demonstrates high agency, ownership, and urgency every day. We also care deeply about bringing modern, well-crafted tools to the trades; an industry that's been underserved for too long. This mindset drives everything we do, from product decisions to hiring choices. About the role As a Staff Product Designer, you are accountable for business outcomes, not just design quality and customer delight. You work with product managers, engineers, and other designers to define the right problems, explore and validate solutions, and ship product experiences that change customer behavior. Design at Coast is AI first and builder-led. Work starts in an LLM, moves into tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex to explore flows and interactions, and then comes into Figma for systems and polish. Designers prototype early, test with real customers, and stay involved through launch and iteration. We are looking for multiple product designers who are excited to work this way and who want to use AI as a core part of how they design. Location & work mode Coast is an in-person company. This role is based out of our New York City office and requires in-person presence 3 to 4 days a week. We believe great products are built by people who are in the room together: collaborating closely, moving fast, and holding each other to a high bar. What you'll do
- End-to-end product ownership: Pair closely with product managers and engineers to define problems, explore solutions, validate concepts, and ship improvements and new capabilities that move key business metrics. Stay involved through launch and iteration, not just handoff
- Customer research & validation: Talk directly with customers to uncover needs and validate assumptions, leverage LLMs to synthesize insights and identify patterns, and run quick tests to refine solutions. Treat research as a tool to accelerate decisions, not a gate to progress
- Prototyping & development: Use AI-powered tools to build functional prototypes, work directly with code, and ship UI improvements to production in collaboration with engineers, without compromising design craft, code quality, or user experience
- Design for simplicity: Encode complexity into intuitive experiences that make the right actions easy and the default path successful for most customers
- Continuous product quality improvement: Proactively identify and fix usability issues, design inconsistencies, and everyday “paper cuts” across Coast, using AI-powered development tools to ship improvements directly to production
- Elevate design craft & quality: Champion great design across Coast through thoughtful critique and collaboration. Share AI techniques, best practices, and learnings with fellow designers, and continuously improve our design system to raise the bar for consistency, usability, and quality
- Hiring: Help with hiring and onboarding and new teammates that can elevate our team and product
What we’re looking for
- Minimum 6 years of experience as a product designer working on complex products
- A portfolio that shows strong product thinking and design craft (i.e., interaction design, visual design, information architecture, ux writing, and user research)
- Ability to distill problems and feedback, then design clear, focused solutions
- Courage to ask questions, experiment, and advocate for what you feel is right
- Humility to accept feedback, adapt your thinking, and iterate toward the best solution
- Active use of LLMs (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) in your design workflow
- Comfort working in tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex even if you are not writing production code by hand
- Ability to work with product managers to define success metrics and iterate based on results
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, and comfort collaborating directly with product managers and engineers
What we offer You'll have a high-impact role with real ownership and the opportunity to shape the future of Coast’s products and services
- Competitive salary ($205,000—$230,000 USD) and equity
- Company-sponsored 401(k)
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Flexible paid time off (vacation, personal well being, paid holidays)
- Paid parental leave
- $400 accessories allowance (a keyboard, mouse, headphones, etc.)
- Education stipend
- Tools to help manage your financial wellness, including webinar, and access to an equity tax advisory service
- Free lunch on Fridays
Learn how we think
- Coast announces $35 million in new growth equity funding, led by Thomvest, adding up to $165 million in total funding
- Building the Financial Platform for the Physical Economy, podcast with our founder and CEO, Daniel Simon
