Full job description

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer - Volunteer Position Who are we? 1 in 3 Americans can’t afford a $400 emergency.

NeighborShare’s mission is to build access to just-in-time financial assistance so a small but pivotal expense, like a car repair or unexpected bill, doesn’t lead to a crisis like job loss or homelessness. We partner with local nonprofits to identify urgent needs that would otherwise go unmet and our growing network of neighbors, corporate partners, and private funders meet these needs in real-time via our tech-enabled platform .

Our model reimagines traditional philanthropy. It’s fast, flexible, community-powered giving that prioritizes dignity, trust, and direct outcomes. It also draws on research that affirms the efficacy and efficiency of direct cash assistance.

What began with a handful of partners has grown into a national network of 60+ organizations across 19 states. To date, we’ve fulfilled $1.5 million+ in urgent needs for more than 15,000 neighbors. To date, we have largely been powered by a dedicated team of volunteers who are experts in their fields—business strategists, engineers, product designers, marketers.

NeighborShare is rooted in trust, speed, and the belief that small acts of generosity, delivered at the right moment, can have a transformative impact. We’re building a new kind of safety net that’s powered by community and connection.

What are you? NeighborShare is seeking to bring on a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer who is willing to generously volunteer their expertise and help execute our strategic product vision. All but two people at NeighborShare today are volunteers, so this position is unpaid. The work can be done remotely and can be done with a 4-5 hour per week commitment. You can anticipate:

  • Onboarding with a small group of current volunteers; most are senior in their fields and have been with NeighborShare for 2+ years

  • Partnering with the Product Team to define the technical roadmap and continue evolving NeighborShare’s platform

  • Maintaining front-end code repositories and providing operational support when/if something on the platform breaks.

  • Overseeing junior developers/contractors in implementing agreed-upon changes and new feature roll outs as needed

  • Working with awesome people doing meaningful work together

Basic Requirements

  • A strong passion for social impact and an action-oriented, entrepreneurial spirit

  • Professional experience working with React

  • Nice to haves:

  • Working knowledge of NextJS and GraphQL, or a willingness to learn

  • Experience developing applications in TypeScript

  • Experience working with Stripe

How to Connect If volunteering is something you’d like to explore, please send a brief cover note and resume to [email protected] .
