Should a software engineer resume list a contract role that ended?

Listing the contract role is the right call for a software engineer, cancellation included, because the merged code you can point to is the deliverable. Drop it only if the client killed the project before your first pull request landed, leaving a title with nothing an engineering manager can inspect. Cutting a real role trades a clean explanation for an unexplained gap.
Merged pull requests make the cancelled contract role real
The résumé line for a cancelled contract role carries the client's industry, your title, the dates, and what you built. The cancellation isn't the subject. Your bullets name the pull requests that merged, the service you stood up, and the design doc you wrote.
A cancelled project doesn't erase a software engineer's deliverable, because merged pull requests exist in the repository long before the product ever launches. An engineering manager reads your line for scope and ownership, not for how the engagement closed.
The bullet reads like any shipped work: "Built the ingestion service for a logistics client. Merged pull requests ran in staging until the client cancelled the project ahead of launch." Keep the LinkedIn entry identical to that line. If the client's repository is private, bring the design doc and a pull request you'd still defend to the interview.
The contract role comes off the résumé only when nothing merged: a kickoff week, an onboarding sprint, an environment that never ran. A title with no repository behind it invites a question you can't answer well.
Explaining the cancelled client in a recruiter screen
A recruiter screen is where the cancellation surfaces, as a question about why the contract role ended. Name what you were hired to build, then what merged, then how the client's decision to cancel the project reached you. The ending goes last. Stick to what the client told you, and don't guess at budget or politics you never saw.
