The unit plan outlives the client who cancelled it
A department chair reading a high school teacher résumé wants the state teaching credential with endorsements first, then evidence you can run a classroom — a unit plan, an observation writeup, a student growth record. A contract engagement that produced any of those still carries your evidence after the client walks away. The cancellation changed the funding, not the work.
Date the engagement honestly and build the line around what you delivered: the sections taught, the curriculum written, the growth data you kept. When the contract role comes off, and where the story goes
Cut the engagement only when nothing reached a student: the client cancelled before a lesson was taught, a unit plan was delivered, or any record existed. A résumé line with no deliverable behind it becomes a liability in the interview it earns. An honest line with dates and a deliverable doesn't.
The cancellation story never goes on the résumé. Keep the entry to dates, the role, and what you delivered, then spend a sentence in the cover letter naming the ending plainly — the client cancelled the project, and the work stands.
Schools hire on an academic calendar, so a semester you can't account for reads worse than a short engagement ever will. Read your résumé as a stranger would and mark every stretch a department chair would have to ask about; if the cancelled contract removes a question instead of raising one, it's earned its line.
