Should a marketing manager resume list a contract role that ended?

A cancelled engagement still earns its place on a marketing manager résumé, because the work that shipped before the client pulled out is yours to keep. The line comes off only when the project died before anything launched — no campaign in market, no channel plan approved, no budget that ever moved. Cutting a real engagement leaves unexplained months, and unexplained months cost more than any cancellation story.
What a cancelled campaign engagement still proves
Evidence in a marketing management role doesn't wait for the engagement to finish. The channel plan you built, the campaign you put in market, and the budget you controlled all existed before the client's decision to cancel. The résumé line holds that work the same way it would for a project that ran its full course.
Write the line the way you'd write a permanent role: discipline first, since brand, demand generation, and product marketing are separate disciplines sharing a title. A marketing director reads mid-flight results as results.
State the dates, the discipline, and what went to market — the client's decision to cancel stays off the page. A cancellation you didn't cause isn't yours to defend in writing, and a line that tries reads as apology. Save the story for the interview.
If nothing launched before the client pulled out
A contract role with nothing shipped is the only case for leaving it off. An engagement that never approved a channel plan or put anything in market leaves the line with no evidence to carry, and an evidence-free line invites questions an interview can't rescue.
The proof a marketing manager needs from a contract role exists before the ending does: a channel plan, a campaign brief with what happened attached, a budget you controlled. When none of those exists, fold the work into a consolidated consulting entry, or let the roles that produced work carry the page.
Your LinkedIn profile shows the engagement's dates with or without a matching résumé line, so cutting the role hides nothing and only removes your side of the record.
Before you've settled the wording, open Browse Marketing Manager jobs and note which campaign terms the descriptions repeat. Rewrite the line with the discipline named and the shipped work attached, then read it next to your permanent roles; if it carries the same evidence, it stays.
