Job Description

The Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects (GSP) reports to the University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as Fairleigh Dickinson University’s central resource for sponsored research and externally funded activities. GSP partners with faculty, staff, and University leadership across the full lifecycle of sponsored projects, from identifying funding opportunities and developing and submitting competitive proposals through award administration, project management, and closeout. The Office also supports the University’s research compliance infrastructure and promotes responsible research practices by interpreting and implementing sponsor requirements, University policies and procedures, and applicable federal and state regulations. Through guidance, education, training, and direct support, GSP helps strengthen institutional re-search capacity, facilitate successful sponsored activities, and minimize institutional risk.

Rooted in a culture of connection and collaboration, the Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects is the focal point for research and grant-related activities at Fairleigh Dickinson University. We are focused on how we support one another and how we show up for our FDU community. Together, we strive to advance our mission to transform sponsored research and serve as agents of positive change.

The Research Compliance Coordinator reports to the Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Projects and supports the administration of Fairleigh Dickinson University's research compliance programs. The Coordinator serves as the primary administrative contact for the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB), manages the day-to-day workflow of human subjects research submissions, conducts preliminary reviews to assess completeness and identify the appropriate review pathway, and coordinates review by the IRB Chair or designated IRB members. The Coordinator also provides administrative and operational support for the University's broader research compliance activities, including biosafety, animal care and use, conflict of interest, responsible conduct of research, research security, export control, and related research compliance training and requirements. The position maintains accurate records, communicates requirements and review outcomes, and supports the development and implementation of efficient, transparent research compliance processes.

As a member of the Research and Sponsored Projects team, the Coordinator participates in the Office's cross-training model and may provide support across research administration functions based on workload and institutional needs. This may include assisting with proposal preparation and submission, sponsored project administration, internal funding programs, research-related initiatives, and other pre-award or post-award activities. This is an early-career professional position that provides an opportunity to develop broad expertise in research compliance, sponsored projects, and research administration.

  1. Bachelor's degree required in a work-related field from an accredited institution.

  2. Minimum of 1-3 years of work-related experience required. Preferably in higher education, research, healthcare, legal or regulatory administration, compliance, or a related environment. Familiarity with human subjects research, research administration, regulatory compliance, electronic workflow systems, or research compliance training programs such as CITI is a plus.

  3. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work accurately with complex information.

  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, committee members, and other constituents.

  5. Ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, records, and workflows simultaneously in a service-oriented environment.

  6. Ability and willingness to learn and apply federal regulations, institutional policies, and established procedures and to exercise sound judgment regarding when matters require consultation or escalation.

  7. Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and data management applications, and demonstrated ability to learn electronic research administration and compliance systems.

  8. Ability to exercise discretion and appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.

  9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member with a positive, flexible, and service-oriented approach; interact effectively and professionally with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, roles, and levels of the University; adapt to changing priorities and responsibilities; and be receptive to feedback and coaching.

  10. Prior professional research compliance experience is not required. The position provides an opportunity to develop broad expertise in research compliance and research administration.

  11. Valid driver's license and accessibility to a car for travel between campuses.

  12. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check.
