Description

NOW HIRING: Recreation Advisors Glenmont Job Corps Center | Turn Fun, Creativity & Connection Into a Career That Makes a Difference!

Are you energetic, creative, and great at getting people involved?

Do you enjoy sports, games, fitness, arts and crafts, events, music, tournaments, group activities, or simply creating experiences people actually want to participate in?

Glenmont Job Corps Center is looking for motivated and enthusiastic Recreation Advisors to join our team!

As a Recreation Advisor, you'll help create the part of Job Corps that students look forward to after classes and career training are finished for the day.

You'll plan and lead activities, supervise recreation spaces, encourage students to participate, and help create a positive environment where young adults can have fun, build friendships, stay active, discover new interests, and develop confidence.

Think of this role as part activity coordinator, part mentor, part coach, and part student-life leader.

Full-Time | 40 Hours Per Week

We currently have the following schedule options:

Schedule Option 1

Wednesday–Friday: 3:00 PM–12:00 AM Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 AM–7:00 PM Monday & Tuesday: OFF

Schedule Option 2

Wednesday–Sunday: 3:00 PM–12:00 AM Monday & Tuesday: OFF

Please note: This position includes evening and weekend hours because those are some of the most important recreation times for our students.

What Does a Recreation Advisor Actually Do?

Our students spend much of their day in academics and career training.

When the school day ends, student life doesn't.

That's where Recreation comes in.

You'll help provide students with a variety of activities that encourage fun, fitness, creativity, teamwork, social interaction, leadership, and healthy ways to spend their free time.

And we don't want recreation to feel like the same activity every day.

We want you to bring ideas!

Depending on available resources and approved programming, recreation could include things like:

Basketball, volleyball, and other sports

Game nights and tournaments

Arts, crafts, and creative projects

Karaoke and talent activities

Board games, chess, and competitions

Fitness and wellness activities

Movie or themed nights

Holiday and special events

Music-related activities

Student competitions and challenges

Outdoor recreation

Team-building activities

Student clubs and interest-based activities

Your goal is to help make recreation something students want to participate in.

You'll Help Create the Student Experience

Being a Recreation Advisor isn't simply about handing students a basketball or opening the game room.

You'll help plan, organize, promote, supervise, and participate in activities.

You may:

Plan activities — Help create a recreation calendar that offers students different things to do throughout the week.

Lead programs — Organize games, tournaments, fitness activities, creative programs, and special events.

Encourage participation — Get students excited about upcoming activities and encourage students who may be hesitant to join.

Supervise students — Maintain appropriate supervision while helping students enjoy themselves safely.

Bring new ideas — Suggest activities based on student interests and help keep programming fresh and engaging.

Use community resources — Help coordinate recreation and leadership opportunities with local organizations and resources when appropriate.

You're Also a Mentor

Sometimes the most meaningful conversations with students don't happen behind a desk.

They happen while you're shooting basketball.

Setting up an event.

Playing a board game.

Helping with an art project.

Or talking after a student has had a difficult day.

As a Recreation Advisor, you'll have opportunities to build positive professional relationships with students while helping them develop:

Confidence

Teamwork

Communication skills

Leadership

Respect for others

Accountability

Healthy coping skills

Positive habits

You'll encourage students while also maintaining appropriate boundaries and holding them accountable for Center expectations.

Fun Still Has to Be Safe

Creating an exciting recreation program also means creating a safe and structured environment.

You'll:

Supervise recreation activities and spaces

Make sure students follow safety expectations

Respond appropriately when concerns arise

Help address student conflicts

Maintain student accountability during activities

Follow Center policies and procedures

Document student participation when required

Communicate concerns to the appropriate staff

We're looking for someone who can be fun and approachable while still being comfortable saying, “That's not safe,” or “That's not appropriate,” when necessary.

Take Pride in Your Recreation Spaces

You'll also help keep the Recreation Department organized and ready for students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining recreation equipment and supplies

  • Keeping track of inventory

  • Monitoring how equipment is used

  • Reporting damaged or missing equipment

  • Performing minor equipment repairs when appropriate

  • Recommending equipment or supplies that may improve programming

  • Helping maintain clean, organized, and welcoming recreation areas

You may also have opportunities to oversee students participating in a Recreation Aide program, helping them develop responsibility and leadership experience.

You'll Work With the Whole Center

Recreation doesn't operate by itself.

You'll collaborate with staff from Residential Living, Counseling, Career Preparation, Social Development, Education & Training, Safety & Security, and other departments to coordinate activities and support students.

You'll also help coordinate evening programming, special events, leadership activities, and other Center-wide experiences.

Good communication and teamwork are essential.

Who Would Be Great in This Role?

You may be a great fit if you're someone who:

Has lots of energy and enjoys interacting with people

Likes planning activities, games, events, or programs

Enjoys working with teenagers and young adults

Can motivate students to participate

Is creative and willing to bring new ideas

Can supervise a group while still making activities enjoyable

Is comfortable addressing inappropriate behavior when necessary

Can handle conflicts calmly and professionally

Understands the importance of safety

Is dependable and organized

Communicates well with students and coworkers

Can work independently and as part of a team

Is comfortable working evenings and weekends

Experience working in recreation, youth programs, summer camps, after-school programs, athletics, coaching, community centers, residential programs, schools, Job Corps, or similar environments can translate very well into this position.

What Do You Need? Required

High School Diploma or equivalent

Valid in-state driver's license

Must meet company insurability requirements

Preferred

Advanced education or degree

Previous Job Corps experience

Experience working with youth or young adults

Recreation, athletics, coaching, youth programming, residential, or similar experience

  • Carrying equipment

  • Pushing and pulling
