Full job description

HELP BUILD THE HR FUNCTION AT SALTWORKS

SaltWorks is looking for a practical, people-focused Director of Human Resources to help lead our growing specialty salt manufacturing company.

This is an important role with real influence. You will work directly with the CEO and leadership team while building relationships with employees throughout the company. SaltWorks includes both office and manufacturing teams, so this is not a purely corporate HR environment. The right person will be comfortable working with everyone—from managers and professionals in the office to employees on the production floor.

You will help create clear, fair, and workable HR practices while remaining closely connected to the people and day-to-day realities of the business.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Serve as a trusted HR resource for employees and managers across the company.

  • Help employees raise concerns, ask questions, and resolve workplace issues appropriately.

  • Advise the CEO and managers on employee relations, performance, communication, and workplace decisions.

  • Lead recruiting, hiring, onboarding, employee documentation, and transitions.

  • Maintain and improve policies, procedures, personnel records, and HR systems.

  • Support benefits, leave, accommodations, payroll coordination, workers’ compensation, and other day-to-day HR needs.

  • Help managers set expectations, address performance concerns, document issues, and communicate effectively.

  • Develop practical approaches to performance reviews, compensation, promotions, attendance, and workplace expectations.

  • Support compliance with Washington and federal employment requirements, using outside counsel or other specialists when appropriate.

  • Help strengthen the company’s workplace culture as SaltWorks continues to grow.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for someone who can bring sound judgment, maturity, discretion, and a practical approach to HR. You do not need to have done every item listed above. You should be someone who can handle the core responsibilities, learn what you do not yet know, and ask for help when specialized advice is needed.

The strongest candidates will bring:

  • Meaningful experience managing a broad range of HR responsibilities, preferably with responsibility for leading or building an HR function.

  • Strong employee-relations skills and the ability to handle sensitive conversations fairly and professionally.

  • The confidence to work directly with senior leadership and the approachability to build trust with employees at every level.

  • Experience supporting both hourly and salaried employees.

  • Strong organization, writing, follow-through, and discretion.

  • The ability to work independently in a hands-on environment without a large HR department or extensive administrative support.

  • Professional fluency in English and Spanish, or strong Spanish-language communication skills. This is an especially important qualification because many SaltWorks employees are Spanish-speaking.

Experience in manufacturing, food production, or another operational environment is helpful, but it is not required. Experience working with a diverse workforce outside a traditional office setting may be equally valuable.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

A degree, HR certification, or experience with a particular HR software system may be helpful, but none is intended to be an automatic barrier to consideration. We value practical experience, judgment, communication skills, and the ability to earn trust.

Experience with iSolved or another HR and payroll system is a plus, but we are more interested in your ability to manage HR effectively than in your familiarity with a specific software platform.
