Full job description

Senior Software Engineer – Developer Platform & Automation

Fully Remote • USA • AWS

Job Type

Full-time

Description

Are you a software engineer who enjoys building tools that make other developers more productive? Do you have experience creating APIs, automating software onboarding, and developing self-service platforms that eliminate repetitive manual processes?

Opportunity

Virtual Service Operations (VSO) is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer – Developer Platform & Automation to support a high-visibility enterprise technology modernization initiative.

This initiative is focused on building reusable software platforms and tools that enable secure data connectivity, interoperability, API integration, and emerging AI capabilities across a large, complex enterprise environment.

The project involves developing foundational capabilities that allow applications, APIs, and software services to be securely connected and integrated through standardized interfaces, including REST APIs and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.

A central component of this effort is creating a developer-facing automation platform that enables engineering teams to onboard applications, APIs, and software services through standardized, repeatable processes rather than building custom integrations each time.

The initial phase focuses on delivering a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), with opportunities to expand the platform into a comprehensive internal developer platform and software factory. This is a hands-on software engineering position, not a traditional DevOps or infrastructure administration role. We are looking for a developer who can write production-quality code, build automation services, and create tools that simplify how other engineering teams deliver software.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development & Platform Engineering

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software components supporting an enterprise developer platform.

  • Build reusable tools and services that automate application, API, and software onboarding.

  • Develop backend services and integrations using Python, Go, TypeScript, Java, or comparable programming languages.

  • Create scalable, maintainable automation that reduces manual engineering effort and improves consistency across development teams.

  • Collaborate with platform architects, software engineers, and cybersecurity professionals to develop secure, reusable capabilities.

Developer Onboarding & Automation

  • Develop automated onboarding pipelines that move software from source control into the enterprise platform with minimal manual intervention.

  • Automate API and application registration, including API specifications, gateway routes, and associated security policies.

  • Design and implement self-service registration workflows that allow development teams to onboard applications and APIs independently.

  • Integrate validation, approval, and compliance checks into automated onboarding processes.

  • Develop reusable templates, configuration standards, and onboarding tools to accelerate adoption across engineering teams.

CI/CD & Automated Validation

  • Develop and integrate CI/CD pipelines using GitLab or comparable source control and automation platforms.

  • Implement automated validation gates that evaluate software and API submissions before deployment or registration.

  • Integrate OpenAPI specification linting, security scanning, and policy compliance checks into automated workflows.

  • Build automated processes that identify and reject noncompliant submissions.

  • Improve pipeline reliability, repeatability, and developer experience.

API Integration & Service Catalog Management

  • Design and develop REST APIs supporting platform automation and integration workflows.

  • Work with OpenAPI specifications to standardize API documentation, validation, and onboarding.

  • Integrate automated workflows with API gateways for route registration, configuration, and policy management.

  • Consolidate existing application and software inventories into a centralized service catalog.

  • Develop and maintain standardized data models supporting application and API discovery, ownership, and lifecycle management.

Developer Experience & Continuous Improvement

  • Create clear technical documentation, onboarding instructions, and reusable development templates.

  • Gather feedback from engineering teams to improve platform usability and automation capabilities.

  • Contribute to MVP design, implementation, testing, and delivery.

  • Identify opportunities to expand platform capabilities following the initial MVP release.

  • Help establish scalable development patterns that support future internal developer platform and software factory capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional software engineering experience developing and maintaining production applications or services.

  • Strong programming proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Python, Go, TypeScript, or Java.

  • Hands-on experience designing, developing, and integrating REST APIs.

  • Working knowledge of OpenAPI specifications and API documentation standards.

  • Experience developing automation that integrates source control systems with CI/CD pipelines.

  • Experience implementing automated validation, testing, or security checks within software delivery workflows.

  • Experience developing self-service workflows or automated processes that include validation and approval steps.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building internal developer platforms, developer productivity tools, or software factory capabilities.

  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD and GitLab-based development workflows.

  • Experience implementing policy-as-code using Open Policy Agent (OPA) or comparable frameworks.

  • Experience automating API gateway configuration, route registration, or security policy management.

  • Experience consolidating software or application inventories from multiple systems into a centralized catalog or standardized data model.

  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerized applications, and GitOps workflows.

  • Familiarity with AWS cloud services and cloud-native application development.

Requirements

  • This is a fully remote position. Candidates must be able to work independently, communicate effectively, and collaborate successfully with team members in a virtual work environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum of 4 years of of professional software engineering experience developing and maintaining production applications or services

  • New hires assigned on this project will be required to undergo and pass drug tests per our client's contract requirements

  • Please note that this specific position requires U.S. citizenship status
