What you'll do...

Role summary:

The (USA) Director, Automation Engineering- Autonomous Transportation will define and lead Walmart’s autonomous transportation strategy, shaping how emerging autonomous technologies create value across the transportation network. This leader will serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor, translating industry developments into actionable strategies and investment recommendations. The role leads a team responsible for developing business cases, selecting technology partners, structuring commercial agreements, executing pilots, and scaling proven solutions across Walmart’s supply chain.

About the team:

Walmart’s Transportation Engineering team shapes the future of transportation across one of North America’s largest private fleets. The team develops and scales next-generation capabilities across autonomous transportation, zero-emission technologies, and yard modernization. Working at the intersection of engineering, operations, technology, and strategy, we identify emerging capabilities, build business cases, partner with leading technology providers, and take solutions from concept and pilot through enterprise-scale deployment—delivering measurable improvements in safety, efficiency, and transportation operations.

What you'll do:

  • Define and lead Walmart’s enterprise autonomous transportation strategy and roadmap.

  • Advise senior leaders on autonomous technology, industry trends, opportunities, and risks.

  • Lead, develop, and coach a high-performing engineering team.

  • Identify use cases, build business cases, and prioritize investments.

  • Evaluate technologies and select strategic partners and vendors.

  • Develop commercial models and negotiate agreements with internal and external partners.

  • Lead autonomous programs from concept and pilot through scaled deployment.

  • Establish performance metrics and use data to drive decisions.

  • Build alignment across Transportation, Operations, Product, Safety, Legal, and other stakeholders.

What you'll bring:

  • Deep expertise in autonomous vehicles, transportation technology, robotics, or related systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technology strategies and translate them into executable roadmaps.

  • Strong people leadership with experience building and developing high-performing teams.

  • Experience developing business cases and evaluating complex investments.

  • Strong commercial acumen, including vendor selection, partnerships, and contract development.

  • Experience taking emerging technologies from pilot through scaled deployment.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and executive communication skills.

  • Ability to influence senior leaders and align cross-functional stakeholders around complex strategic decisions.

The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00 - $260,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :

Minimum Qualifications...

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field and 5 years’ experience in Engineering, supply chain, or a related area. Option 2: 7

years’ experience in Engineering, supply chain, or a related area.

3 years’ supervisory experience.
