The Software Engineer develops, maintains, and enhances complex and diverse software systems (e.g., processing-intensive analytics, novel algorithm development, manipulation of extremely large data sets, real-time systems, and business management information systems) based upon documented requirements. Works individually or as part of a team. Reviews and tests software components for adherence to the design requirements and documents test results. Resolves software problem reports. Utilizes software development and software design methodologies appropriate to the development environment. Provides specific input to the software components of system design to include hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of Commercial Off-the-shelf (COTS)/Government Off-the-shelf (GOTS) in place of new development, and requirements analysis and synthesis from system level to individual software components.</span></span>\n

\n Key responsibilities may include:</b></span></span>\n

• Develop and sustain research infrastructure software supporting complex systems\n

• Integrate existing software into new or modified systems and operating environments, ensuring compatibility, performance, and maintainability\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Contribute across the software lifecycle: requirements interpretation, design, implementation, testing, verification, and deployment of prototype and operational software\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Build and improve automation, tooling, and CI/CD workflows to accelerate development and increase reliability (e.g., build pipelines, test automation, packaging, releases processes)\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Work in Linux-based development and runtime environments, including scripting and troubleshooting at the OS and application layers\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Collaborate with engineers/researchers to identify successful approaches to complex problems, rapidly iterate prototypes, and transition viable solutions toward operational use\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Support networked systems and software that interacts with networking stacks, data flows, distributed services, or mission environments\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Interface directly with customer stakeholders (technical and programmatic) to coordinate priorities, communicate progress, and resolve issues\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Monitor and direct subcontractor tasking as needed by providing technical guidance, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring integration and quality standards are met\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Produce clear technical documentation (design notes, build/deploy instructions, test evidence, and operational runbooks)\n

Minimum qualifications:</span></span>\n

</p>\n

• Minimum of 6+ years of experience and a Bachelors, 4+ years and a Masters, or 2+ years and a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related discipline. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, 4 additional years of experience is required for a total of 10 years\n

</span></span></span></li>\n

• Software development experience with the building and integration of applications/services in complex environments\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Strong hands-on proficiency in Python and at least one of C/C++, Java, or Go (exposure to all is a plus)\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Familiarity with secure development practices in restricted environments (e.g., hardened enclaves, controlled repos, offline build patterns)\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Working knowledge in software engineering practices and tooling, such as:\n

*Git/GitHub/GitLab branching, PRs, and code reviews\n

*Agile development practices\n

*CI tooling (e.g., Jenkins) or similar pipelines\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Strong problem-solving ability with a track record of learning new technologies quickly and delivering results in ambiguous/problem-driven research settings\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Strong communication skills to explain technical issues and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences\n

\n Preferred qualifications:</span></span>\n

• Experience supporting research platforms or environments where rapid prototyping transitions into operationally relevant software\n

• Prior experience providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, or coordinating work across development teams\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Experience with design, development, test, verification, and certification of operational software (including evidence-driven testing and documentation)\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Strong “systems” familiarity:\n

*Linux and Windows system skills\n

*Shell scripting and automation\n

*Virtualization / VM technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM, VirtualBox, Proxmox)</span></span></li>\n

• Networking background:\n

*TCP/IP fundamentals, routing/switching concepts, firewalls\n

*Network service development, packet/data pipeline integration, network troubleshooting\n

</span></span></li>\n

• Experience with modern ecosystem tooling, such as:\n

*Containers (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)\n

*Infrastructure automation via Ansible, Terraform\n

*Artifact/package management, reproducible builds, release engineering\n
