Job Description:
Why This Role
Miller is building a new software-as-a-service business from the ground up: cloud software for the welding and fabrication industry, backed by nearly a century of industry leadership and the resources of ITW. You’ll be one of the first engineers on a small, senior internal team, helping set how we build, ship, and run software, including how we adopt AI-assisted engineering as those practices take shape, and you’ll see your work used by real customers on real shop floors.
Location: Remote -Occasional travel to our Appleton, WI facility.
Job Description
The Senior Software Engineer owns delivery of features and projects end to end on Miller’s cloud SaaS platform, from refining requirements with Product, through design and code, to operating what they build in production. Working alongside our Software Architect, product leaders, and contract development partners, you’ll raise the bar for quality and speed, mentor others, and help establish the engineering practices a modern SaaS business runs on.
Key Responsibilities
-
Own delivery of projects end to end
-
Take high-level, often ambiguous problems, break them into well-defined work, and deliver independently.
-
Design and build cloud services, APIs, and web applications on Microsoft Azure using C#/.NET and modern front-end frameworks.
-
Partner with Product to refine requirements and propose simpler alternatives that deliver the same value faster.
-
Engage directly with customers, support, and design partners to understand how our software is used, and ship features with the telemetry needed to show usage and value.
-
Review code and designs from contract development partners, raising quality and velocity concerns with data.
-
Define monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for what you own; take part in on-call and incident response and contribute to blameless postmortems.
-
Build with infrastructure as code and CI/CD, and apply security and compliance controls (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001) in day-to-day work.
-
Use time-boxed spikes and prototypes to test ideas and make deliberate calls on when to throw a prototype away versus harden it.
-
Mentor other engineers through code review, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
-
Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude) to speed up design, coding, testing, and documentation, while reviewing AI-generated output critically and following ITW AI usage policy.
-
Stay current as AI tools evolve, understand their trade-offs and risks, and share what works with the team.
-
Deliver software enhancements
-
Reviewing code from external development partners
-
Improve software development, testing, and deployment processes.
Minimum Qualifications
-
4+ years of professional software development experience.
-
Hands-on experience building and operating cloud-hosted web applications or services in production (Azure preferred).
-
Strong proficiency in C#/.NET or a comparable modern language, including REST APIs and relational databases.
-
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring production systems.
-
Demonstrated ability to own delivery end to end, work through ambiguity, and debug and improve code written by others, including AI-generated and partner code.
-
Experience using AI-assisted development tools in professional work, with a clear view of where they help and where they don’t.
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience at a SaaS product company (multi-tenant architecture, subscription products).
-
Infrastructure as code (e.g., Bicep, Terraform) and containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Azure Container Apps).
-
Experience working with or reviewing the work of contract or outsourced development teams.
-
Exposure to SOC 2, ISO 27001, or secure software development practices.
-
IoT, connected equipment, or industrial and manufacturing data experience.
-
Modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Blazor).
-
Experience building AI or LLM-powered features into products.
-
Agile/Scrum experience and familiarity with delivery metrics such as DORA.
-
Curiosity about welding, fabrication, and the people who do the work.
