Full job description
About Zumper Zumper is building a smarter future for multifamily renting and marketing. For more than a decade, we’ve helped millions of renters find their next home, giving us first-hand knowledge of how people search for, discover, and choose where to live.
Today, Zumper serves both sides of the rental market. Millions of renters use our marketplace to find their next home, and the teams behind those properties use our platform to reach renters with tools that simplify marketing across every channel and touchpoint.
Zumper’s investors include Kleiner Perkins, Goodwater Capital, Headline, Dawn Capital, and Blackstone. As we enter our next chapter, we're looking for people who want to challenge how things have always been done and help move renting forward. Come build with us.
About this opportunity We are looking to hire a Head of Legal to be our legal team. You'll own the commercial agreements that power our partnerships, keep the company ahead of a complex and evolving regulatory landscape, and serve as a trusted advisor to Product and Leadership teams alike. You'll also support our board and handle the full spectrum of day-to-day legal work — from employment questions to managing outside counsel on litigation — as a true partner to the business. This role reports to our CFO.
What you'll do
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including partnership deals, vendor contracts, SaaS arrangements, and licensing agreements
- Own the company's compliance posture across applicable regulatory frameworks, including data privacy, fair housing, consumer protection, and residential rental regulations; monitor the regulatory landscape and advise leadership on emerging obligations
- Provide support in connection with board meetings, including preparing board materials, drafting resolutions, and managing board communications; partner with Finance and Leadership on corporate structuring, fundraising, and investor-related legal matters
- Serve as the day-to-day legal partner to the product and engineering teams; advise on feature development, consumer-facing policies, IP considerations, and platform risk before issues arise
- Advise on employment matters in partnership with the People team; manage and coordinate outside counsel on litigation and disputes; develop and maintain legal playbooks, templates, and intake processes
Who you are
- JD from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one state bar
- 5+ years of legal experience—law firm, in-house, or a combination of both
- Meaningful commercial contracts experience: you've negotiated complex agreements and can move fast without sacrificing quality
- Experience supporting a board of directors—preparing materials, drafting resolutions, and managing board communications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to translate legal complexity into clear guidance for non-lawyers
- Comfortable working with significant autonomy in a lean, fast-moving environment
- Experience in SaaS, real estate, proptech, or a two-sided marketplace business
- Familiarity with venture-backed companies, litigation, and M&A processes
Compensation The US base salary range for this role is $250,000 - $300,000. Where an offer falls within that range depends on your experience, skills, and the cost of labor in your local market — we benchmark against several U.S. geographic tiers and adjust accordingly.
What we offer
- Fully remote, with a home office stipend to set up your workspace
- Excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance options with up to 100% premium coverage
- 401k plan + 3% company match
- Stock options
- FSAs, HSAs, life insurance, and short & long-term disability insurance
- Up to 12-weeks of paid parental leave
- Flexible vacation policy - work hard and take time off when you need it
- Health & wellness and internet reimbursements
- Group training and individual professional development programs
- Team activities, virtual company-wide hosted games, and virtual happy hours
- Weekly insight into company metrics
- Employee Resource Group (zERG) that celebrates all communities - Black, LGBTQIA+, Women, Asian & Pacific Islanders, and more! zERG works together to create safe spaces for candid conversations
- Hackathons (not overnight!)
