Department Overview:
BU is ranked one of the top 50 public universities and is a premier R1 research university. The University's direct impact on the regional economy has reached $1.2 billion. The recent $113 million research award from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) further catalyzes and fosters knowledge transfer and partnerships across industries and academia to advance technology development and innovation in science and engineering, and a $160 million NSF ENGINE grant helps the university to build ecosystems for science discovery and technology advancement. The university attracts outstanding students and award-winning faculty, including 2019 Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Whittingham, who are partners in active discovery. The Department has recently launched a workforce training program partnered with the School of Management to develop a Biomanufacturing Project Management Certificate Program funded by BioMADE. The Department also runs a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) PREP postdoc and graduate training program.
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department is particularly strong in advanced biomanufacturing, biomaterials, biomechanics, cardiovascular engineering, nanomedicine, neuroengineering, organ-on-a-chip, stem cells, tissue engineering/regenerative medicine, and wearable biosensors. The BME Department is the home of the Center of Biomanufacturing for Regenerative Medicine (CBRM), and the Department has recently formed a joint Institute for Regenerative Medicine with Upstate Medical University. The Center will serve as a premier AI research hub for the entire State University of New York system and focus on developing novel technical innovations related to the safety and security of artificial intelligence models and systems.
Job Description:
As part of the strategic plan for expanding biomedical and health science research in emerging fields, the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with an expected start date of September 1, 2027.
We seek applications from candidates in all areas of biomedical engineering; however, we are particularly interested in the areas of biomedical robotics and embodied intelligence for health and medicine. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled physiological monitoring, biomechatronics, digital twins, human-machine interfaces, intelligent medical devices and instrumentation, implantable and wearable sensors and devices, rehabilitation and assistive technologies, and surgical and image-guided robotics. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness are preferred.
Responsibilities of the position include:

Expand existing institutional capabilities in biomedical robotics and embodied intelligence for health and medicine through innovative research and external funding.

Drive research initiatives and foster interdisciplinary collaborations within Binghamton University's New York Center for AI Responsibility and Research.

Develop new undergraduate and graduate courses, teach and mentor students, and contribute to departmental growth.
