Job Description

An established consumer subscription company is seeking a Director of Product Design to shape its member experience across web, iOS, and Android. The company combines curated products with digital discovery and commerce, with a focus on creating engaging, intuitive experiences that keep members coming back.

As the Director of Product Design, you’ll lead a small design team and partner closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and executive leadership to define product vision and deliver high-quality digital experiences. You’ll translate business goals and member needs into clear design direction while remaining hands-on with complex projects, from initial concepts through execution.

This role combines design leadership, strong visual and interaction craft, and an AI-forward approach to development. You’ll evolve the design system, establish effective team practices, and shape how AI tools support prototyping, component creation, frontend builds, and the transition from design to production.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of product design experience building consumer-facing products

  • 3+ years of experience leading and managing design teams

  • Proven track record of shipping successful products across web, iOS, and Android

  • Experience setting design direction at the product or company level

  • Deep proficiency in Figma, including design systems, usability metrics, human-computer interaction principles, and UX best practices

  • Hands-on experience with AI tools such as Claude, Claude Code, and Figma MCP

  • A clear perspective on how AI can improve design workflows and support production development

  • Strong business acumen and the ability to connect design decisions to revenue, retention, and member satisfaction

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, including experience defending design decisions and influencing executive stakeholders

  • Experience hiring, developing, and retaining designers

  • Ability to balance design quality, delivery speed, business priorities, and technical constraints in a lean, iterative environment

  • A hands-on builder’s mindset, with comfort navigating ambiguity and taking initiative

  • Strong commitment to design craft and continuous improvement

What You Will Be Doing Daily Responsibilities

  • Own product design strategy and collaborate with leadership to shape the digital product vision

  • Translate business objectives and member needs into intuitive, visually polished experiences across the website and mobile apps

  • Turn ambiguous ideas and complex problems into clear design direction and practical solutions

  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape roadmaps, prioritize initiatives, and evaluate tradeoffs

  • Lead complex design projects end to end while contributing directly to design execution

  • Present design strategy and work to executive and cross-functional stakeholders, building alignment and advocating for members

  • Evolve the product design system to maintain consistency and support AI-assisted development

  • Establish team processes that sustain quality as the product and organization grow

  • Stay current with developments in digital product design and AI, applying relevant approaches to the team’s work

AI-Enabled Design & Development

  • Define how the design team uses tools such as Claude, Claude Code, and Figma MCP

  • Use AI tools to support component creation, prototyping, and frontend builds

  • Improve design handoffs, documentation, and component practices for an AI-assisted design-to-production workflow

  • Maintain high standards for usability and design quality as new development methods are adopted

Team Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a team of 1–2 designers

  • Help recruit and hire design talent

  • Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and create development paths

  • Build a team culture grounded in craft, collaboration, and constructive feedback

The Offer

  • Ownership of design strategy across web, iOS, and Android

  • Opportunity to shape an established consumer product’s member experience

  • Direct collaboration with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and executive leadership

  • Hands-on influence over the design system and AI-enabled development practices

  • Opportunity to lead and develop a small design team while continuing to contribute directly to product design
