Full job description
Description
Amazon's Catalog Ontology is the shared product-knowledge layer that powers experiences across the entire Stores ecosystem. Every time a customer searches, browses, or buys, structured product knowledge is working behind the scenes to deliver accurate discovery, trustworthy information, and broad selection. This is the first time the ontology is getting a dedicated Principal Product Manager - Technical to treat it as a product in its own right. You will define the product strategy from the ground up, drive adoption across the downstream domains that depend on it, and shape a roadmap whose benefits compound across the Stores business. If you are a technical product leader who does your best work in ambiguous, cross-organizational spaces and wants to own a problem where one good decision makes dozens of teams more effective, we want to talk to you.
Key job responsibilities
Own the end-to-end product vision and multi-year roadmap for the Catalog Ontology, treating it as a shared platform product consumed across all Amazon Stores surface areas.
Develop and drive an adoption strategy that gets downstream consumers — Shopping CX, Listing Ingestion, Fulfillment Systems, and beyond — to build on the ontology, producing the narratives, mechanisms, and reporting that lower the barrier to adoption.
Define and continuously improve the metrics that measure ontology adoption, data quality, and downstream customer impact, and use that data to inform trade-off decisions between long-term ontology investments and immediate consumer-team needs.
Influence engineering and science partners on schema-modeling decisions, ontology structure, and knowledge-graph architecture so the ontology scales across the Stores business and supports emerging AI and personalization experiences.
Partner across downstream domains and senior leadership to deliver a coherent, well-adopted product rather than point solutions, building consensus across organizations that each have their own priorities.
A day in the life
You might start by reviewing adoption and data-quality metrics, then shift into writing or refining a product narrative that explains the ontology's value to a new downstream team. Midday could bring a technical design review with engineering and science partners, where you evaluate schema-modeling trade-offs — how a change to an ontology class or constraint rule will ripple across multiple surfaces. Later, you may meet with senior leaders across Shopping CX, Listing Ingestion, or Fulfillment to align on shared goals and unblock cross-org dependencies. Growth here comes through expanding the scope and ambiguity you take on: the role sits at the intersection of three active charters, and you can move laterally across the full product-knowledge arc, from how selection enters the catalog to how it powers discovery, personalization, and fulfillment.
About the team
Our team owns the structured product knowledge that Shopping CX, Listing Ingestion, and Fulfillment Systems all depend on. While most product teams own a single surface, we operate upstream of nearly everything a customer sees — giving us horizontal leverage across the Stores business. The ontology is also the connective tissue for two major strategic investments: AI-powered shopping experiences and scaling how new selection is listed and ingested into the catalog. . We pair deep ontology, taxonomy, and schema expertise with broad cross-organizational product strategy, and we are looking for someone who can think like a platform provider and a customer-experience owner at the same time.
