Marine Inspector / Senior Marine Inspector

Locations: Portland, OR and Southern California

Experience Required: 3+ Years (Independent Field Experience Required)

Travel: Frequent local and regional travel to ports, shipyards, marine terminals, and customer facilities.

Position Summary

ATS is seeking an experienced Marine Inspector to support our growing Marine Services division in Portland, Oregon and Southern California. This position requires an individual who can work independently, interface directly with clients, and perform a wide variety of marine inspection, survey, and quality assurance services aboard commercial vessels, government vessels, barges, terminals, and marine facilities.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience performing vessel inspections, thickness gauging, piping inspections, welding inspections, coating assessments, and shipyard oversight activities. Candidates with certifications or experience working with major classification societies and naval standards are strongly preferred.

The Marine Inspector will be responsible for performing and managing:

• Classification Society and Owner-required inspections

• Hull Condition Surveys

• Thickness Measurement Surveys

• Steel Renewal Weld Inspections

• Shipyard Repair Oversight and Supervision

• Repair Specification Development

• Piping System Surveys and Assessments

• Coating Condition Assessments

• Corrosion Mapping and Pitting Surveys

• Dry Dock and Repair Period Inspections

• Structural Integrity Assessments

• Marine Welding Inspections

• Damage Evaluations and Reporting

• Quality Assurance and Quality Control Audits

• Marine Safety Compliance Reviews

• Client Consultation and Technical Reporting

• American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)

• Lloyd's Register (LR)

• DNV (Det Norske Veritas)

• Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK)

• RINA

• U.S. Navy / NAVSEA Programs

• Military Sealift Command (MSC)

• Commercial Vessel Operators

• Shipyards and Marine Terminals

• Preferred Certifications

One or more of the following certifications are highly desirable:

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

• NACE / AMPP Coating Inspector

• Certified Marine Surveyor (CMS)

• ASNT Level II or III MT,PT,UT

• API 510, 570, or 653

• OSHA Maritime Safety Training

• Confined Space Training

• CPR / First Aid Certification

• Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of marine inspection, marine surveying, shipyard, or vessel repair experience.

• Demonstrated ability to perform inspections independently.

• Strong understanding of marine structures, welding, coatings, corrosion, and piping systems.

• Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, repair procedures, and classification requirements.

• Experience preparing professional technical reports and repair recommendations.

• Strong customer communication and project management skills.

• Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.

• Physical Requirements

• Ability to climb ladders, staging, and vessel structures.

• Ability to access confined spaces and vessel compartments.

• Ability to work in shipyards, onboard vessels, and industrial environments.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to wear required PPE and work around marine and industrial hazards.

Preferred Candidate Profile

We are specifically seeking a self-directed field professional who can step onto a vessel or into a shipyard with minimal supervision, represent ATS professionally, identify inspection requirements, communicate with clients and shipyard personnel, and deliver high-quality technical reporting and recommendations.

This position is ideal for experienced marine inspectors, marine surveyors, shipyard QA/QC inspectors, former Navy inspectors, or maritime professionals looking to advance their careers with a growing organization.
