Biddeford School department is seeking:

POSITION:Educational Technician I, II, III or Administrative Assistant - Student Transportation Support (Part-Time)

LOCATION:Biddeford Primary School

HOURS:Up to a scheduled 3 hours per week (no overtime) in addition to the primary role's contracted hours. The schedule will be as needed between 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM, 1-2 days per week (typically Monday-Friday, with schedule determined by transportation needs and depending on primary role's contracted hours)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Eligible for appropriate Maine Department of Education certification as Educational Technician I.

  • Course work in education or a related field is preferred.

  • Safety Care trained or willingness to complete Safety Care training upon hire (training provided by the district).

  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly and effectively with students.

  • Flexibility to work variable hours based on student transportation needs.

  • Reliable transportation and ability to report to work on short notice when needed.

REPORTS TO:Building Principal, Biddeford Primary School

POSITION SUMMARY:This position provides supervision and support for students who have been returned to school due to the absence of authorized adults at their bus stops. The Educational Technician will ensure student safety and well-being while awaiting parent/guardian pickup, and will assist with general office and building duties when no students require supervision.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Duties (Student Supervision):

  • Provide calm, supportive supervision for students returned from bus routes due to unsupervised bus stops.

  • Ensure students' safety, comfort, and well-being while awaiting parent/guardian pickup.

  • Implement de-escalation techniques and behavioral support strategies as needed for students who are distressed, anxious, or upset.

  • Maintain accurate records of student arrivals, parent contact attempts, and pickup times.

  • Communicate with building principal and office staff regarding student status and parent contact.

  • Follow established protocols for contacting parents/guardians and emergency contacts.

  • Alert administration to any concerns about student welfare, repeated family patterns, or safety issues.

  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student and family information.

  • Serve as primary point of contact for families who need to be contacted for pick-up.

Secondary Duties (When No Students Require Supervision):

  • Assist building principal and office staff with clerical tasks and administrative duties as assigned.

  • Prepare and organize materials for building activities or classroom use as requested.

  • Assist with end-of-day building duties (organizing materials, light cleaning, preparing spaces for the next day).

  • Support other building needs as directed by the principal.

Professional Expectations:

  • Demonstrate flexibility and creative problem-solving in response to varying daily needs.

  • Exhibit strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills with students, families, and staff.

  • Display calmness, kindness, and a warm and sincere demeanor when interacting with students and families.

  • Participate in Safety Care training and other professional development as required by the district.

  • Respond professionally and compassionately to families experiencing challenging circumstances.

  • Work collaboratively with transportation staff, administrators, and office personnel.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Ability to remain calm and supportive with students in distress

  • Strong de-escalation and crisis management skills (or willingness to develop through training)

  • Excellent judgment in assessing student needs and safety concerns

  • Professional and compassionate communication with families in difficult situations

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing daily schedules and responsibilities

  • Understanding of confidentiality requirements and ethical obligations

  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness when working with diverse families

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to supervise and interact with students of varying ages (PreK-8)

  • Ability to respond physically if a student requires Safety Care intervention

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around spaces for extended periods

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (materials, supplies, or assistance with younger students if needed)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Per the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a part-time, variable-hour position with scheduling based on student transportation needs. Hours will typically be scheduled between 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM on 1-2 days per week, with potential for additional hours during peak periods.

COMPENSATION:

Based on position, education level, experience, and per the collective bargaining agreement

Range: $21.70 - $32.67 per hour , pro-rated for hours worked.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Committee's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
