Position Summary
-
Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

The Cardiac Cath lab RN provides evidence-based care; assesses the patient prior to and during the procedure; monitors electrical and hemodynamic parameters; provides moderate sedation under the direction of the physician; assists in advanced diagnostic and invasive procedures; may perform additional tasks such as circulating or monitoring as trained and assisting the Cardiologist as requested.

Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department

Prepares the Cath Lab procedure room by ensuring that adequate stock is available
-
Develops and contributes to a plan of care for the patient during the procedure
-
Prepares the patient and equipment for Cath Lab procedures, including site preparation, monitoring equipment and intravenous/arterial line management
-
Administers intravenous and oral medications
-
Attends to the patient needs during the procedure
-
Monitors hemodynamic, electrical, and angiographic data
-
Assists in the testing of arterial and venous blood samples following various monitoring parameters
-
Circulates during the procedure as applicable
-
Participates in life-saving measures such as defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
-
Participates in orienting new staff
-
Population Served: • Adult (18-64yrs) • Geriatric (65 yrs & older)

Position Responsibilities

Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
-
Administers moderate and deep sedation medications and monitors patient according to clinical guideline.
-
Functions in circulator role, caring for patients and assisting physician during procedure.
-
Functions in scrub role, setting up sterile field and assisting physician with procedure.
-
Functions in monitor role, assesses ECG, obtain and record waveforms and pressures.
-
Prepares sterile tray for procedure and ensures aseptic technique and safety practices are followed.
-
Discontinues venous and arterial lines, ongoing monitoring of access site and achieves hemostasis.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
-
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
-
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
-
Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
-
Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training, or within 6 months of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

Completion of Basic EKG class or within 1 year of hire

Organizational Requirements:

Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
-
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Professional certification in nursing specialty.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
-
Proficient in communication skills.
-
Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.

Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.
-
Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.

Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.

Ability to read and understand chart documentation.
-
Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.
-
Ability to read, write and understand the English language.
-
A minimum of 2 years experience in critical care nursing.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Previous experience in cardiac cathlab
