Southern California Edison's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) 2.0 Program is a transformational initiative that is modernizing the company's metering, communications, and data capabilities to support the evolving energy landscape. This enterprise-wide program will replace and support more than 5.7 million meters across SCE's service territory while advancing the technology and systems that power a smarter, more connected grid. Become a Metering Systems Engineer 3 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you'll directly contribute to the successful modernization of the SCE's metering infrastructure by ensuring that AMI 2.0 technologies are thoroughly tested, validated, and deployed with high reliability. This position requires close collaboration with internal teams including engineering, IT, grid operations, and field operations as well as external metering and AMI solution vendors. The Engineer ensures that metering systems, communication components, and grid applications are technically feasible, interoperable, secure, and aligned with the utility's quality, performance, and reliability standards. This role is instrumental in ensuring field readiness and the successful deployment of next-generation AMI technologies that advance SCE's long-term vision for grid modernization, operational excellence, and a more intelligent, connected energy ecosystem.
Day-to-Day Activities

Lead validation of AMI 2.0 metering solutions through detailed functional and communication performance of metering solutions.

Lead the end‑to‑end system integration testing, including interoperability between meters, head‑end systems, networks, and grid management applications.

Validate meter firmware, configuration files, communication modules (WI-SUN, LTE, Wi-Fi), and AMI platform performance against defined requirements.

Troubleshoot customer‑facing applications, test tools, and field diagnostic tools, escalating issues as needed and documenting resolutions.

Develop technical procedures, job aids, process documentation, and field test protocols for Field Technicians and Meter Operations teams.

Lead readiness assessments, training activities, and operational coordination to ensure field teams are equipped for deployment.

Participate in pre‑deployment change management activities by reviewing system changes, assessing operational impacts, and communicating updates to stakeholders.

Review and validate vendor‑supplied hardware specifications, test reports, engineering documentation, and performance claims.

Lead vendor and internal integration efforts to ensure firmware, communication modules, and device behaviors align with AMI 2.0 architectural requirements.

Assist in troubleshooting multi‑vendor interoperability issues involving meters, communication networks, and head‑end systems.

Responsibilities

Ensures technical issues and problems are resolved in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing available resources.

Supervises, leads, and coordinates work with full time and contract employees in the execution of new technical strategies, equipment or standards.

Conducts life cycle assessments for utility infrastructure materials and processes; improves preventive maintenance procedures to decrease overall downtime.

Conducts risk assessments and implements risk mitigation strategies to ensure the safety and reliability of engineering projects.

Supports audits and inspections; ensures compliance with relevant environmental, health, and safety
-
Regulations.

Provides engineering and technical expertise and guidance for the identification, analysis and resolution of high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems in engineering.

Ensures the engineering facility design basis is controlled and design basis documentation is maintained. Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating high-impact complex projects.

Provides support and technical training to junior engineering levels.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.

Five or more years of experience in engineering within operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.

Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications

Strong understanding of AMI systems, interoperability standards, and testing methodologies

Experience working in lab environments.

Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Strong knowledge of wireless communication protocols and IT integration.

Additional Information

This position's work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

The primary work location for this position is Westminster, CA.

Position will require traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.

This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
