Full job description

Description

Are you passionate about leading teams that design and develop highly available, large-scale services? Would you like to empower engineers to invent and build solutions that truly make a difference for customers? Are you an experienced Software Development Manager who is excited to build something new at cloud scale? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to lead a team on AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

A wave of innovation is changing how developers deploy and operate applications in the cloud. AWS Elastic Beanstalk is at the center of that change, and we are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team building the next generation of the service.

Key job responsibilities

  • • Lead, hire and grow a high-performing team of 10+ software development engineers. Build a culture of innovation, ownership and continuous improvement through regular 1:1s, performance management, career development and technical coaching.

  • • Own the full software development lifecycle for Elastic Beanstalk features, from requirements and design through implementation, testing and launch.

  • • Drive technical strategy and architecture decisions, working with product management, principal engineers and partner teams to define and execute the product roadmap.

  • • Operate and scale a global AWS service, raising the bar on operational excellence through metrics-driven decisions, automated monitoring and proactive issue resolution.

  • • Take ownership of ambiguous, complex problems that span multiple teams and organizations. Break them into actionable plans, manage dependencies and deliver results in a fast-moving environment.

  • • Champion customer obsession by understanding customer pain points, turning feedback into requirements and making sure the team delivers experiences that drive adoption and satisfaction.

About the team

AWS Elastic Beanstalk is the application management service on AWS. Customers bring their applications as source code, a Dockerfile or a container image. Beanstalk provisions the infrastructure and takes on the operational work for the life of the application: scaling, patching, health monitoring, compliance and platform upgrades. Our customers include startups shipping their first app, enterprises moving older .NET and Java workloads off on-premises servers, SaaS providers running thousands of tenant environments, and regulated industries with HIPAA, PCI and FedRAMP requirements.

We're in a period of major growth. Alongside our Standard Mode on Amazon EC2, we recently launched Cluster Mode. It's powered by Amazon EKS and runs many containerized applications on shared, fully managed infrastructure. It can containerize source code automatically with Cloud Native Buildpacks and comes with built-in OpenTelemetry observability. Both modes use the same console, CLI and API. This changes how customers run whole portfolios of applications on AWS, and there's a lot left to build.

As a Software Development Manager, you'll lead engineers who own large-scale distributed systems that run production workloads in every commercial AWS Region, including AWS GovCloud (US). We work closely with the Amazon EC2, Amazon EKS, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon RDS and AWS security teams to deliver an integrated experience. Our team has a wide mix of experience levels and tenures. We value innovation, operational excellence and knowledge-sharing, and we grow engineers through one-on-one mentorship, thorough code reviews and real ownership of the systems they build.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • 3+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience

  • 1+ years of providing technical leadership and project management for all aspects of the software development lifecycle experience

  • 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using Java, C#, or C++ experience

  • 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using service-oriented architecture experience

  • 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using distributed programming experience

  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
