Job Summary

The Staff Engineer will conduct reservoir performance evaluations involving numerical reservoir simulation, material balance calculations, rate and pressure transient analysis, petrophysical analysis, and geomechanical modeling. The Staff Engineer will also coordinate those evaluations with laboratory tests, field data collection, and EOS modeling software to evaluate the feasibility of EOR. These tasks will be necessary to design, implement, and evaluate EOR pilot tests, and their potential for scale up. The Staff Engineer may also be tasked with evaluating the performance of our ongoing EOR field development programs. The engineer may be called on to provide expert testimony in regulatory hearings.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review performance of ongoing industry EOR projects and identify EOR opportunities for exploitation on CLR owned assets and acquisition targets.

  • Support the screening for potential unconventional EOR projects.

  • Use numerical reservoir simulation and PVT software, rate and pressure transient analysis and geomechanical modeling as tools to conduct engineering studies to evaluate the potential of various EOR processes and to evaluate EOR pilot performance.

  • Evaluate pilot or field development performance, identify and recommend appropriate actions to optimize economic benefit.

  • Identify, design, oversee and potentially conduct a variety of data collection and laboratory testing activities in support of EOR feasibility studies and EOR pilot evaluation.

  • Reach solid conclusions and recommend projects consistent with engineering studies and company strategy. Communicate recommendations lucidly and succinctly to management and garner support for projects.

  • Research, develop and document processes and workflows for duties required.

  • Assist in budget preparation for anticipated projects.

  • Support, design and oversee reservoir engineering aspects of field pilot testing activities in cooperation with asset team and operations personnel.

  • Provide exhibits and expert testimony at regulatory hearings supporting company EOR projects.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Competencies

  • Outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills coupled with a strong work ethic.

  • Advanced skills using reservoir simulation and fracture modeling software such as ResFrac, CMG, and GOHFER.

  • Advanced understanding of phase behavior, especially under conditions of miscibility or near-miscibility.

  • Experience with miscible-gas huff-and-puff EOR in unconventional reservoirs is preferred.

  • Experience with thermal EOR in conventional heavy-oil reservoirs—including CSS, SAGD, and steam flooding—is preferred.

  • Advanced skills using PVT software such as Winprop and PVTSim is required.

  • Advanced understanding of Pressure Transient Analysis and Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) methods is preferred.

  • Skilled user of PTA and RTA software tools such as Kappa, Harmony and Whitson+.

  • Working knowledge of economic programs (ARIES or similar industry software) preferred.

  • Ability to integrate data from various sources and results from various analyses into reservoir and/or geomechanical models.

  • Excellent computer skills including ability to efficiently manipulate large data sets and analyze field and laboratory data.

  • Action oriented - Taking on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm.

  • Instills trust - Gaining the confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.

  • Ensures accountability - Holding self and others accountable to meet commitments.

  • Drives results - Consistently achieving results, even under tough circumstances.

  • Nimble learning - Actively learning through experimentation when tackling new problems, using both successes and failures as learning fodder.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical or other related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of recent, relevant industry experience.

  • Skilled in relevant industry software.

  • An acceptable pre-employment background and drug test.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with numerical reservoir simulation

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with fracture modeling.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of industry EOR experience

  • Advanced understanding of Pressure Transient and Rate Transient Analysis and softwares such as Kappa, Harmony and Whitson+.

  • Working knowledge of economic programs (ARIES or similar industry software).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping.

  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
