Software Developer in Test (SDET)
Downtown Salt Lake City, UT
$110-130K/year
Hybrid Schedule, 4 days a week onsite
About the Role
A growing technology organization is seeking a Software Developer in Test (SDET) to join its Quality Assurance team. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building, maintaining, and improving automated testing frameworks for complex backend systems and APIs.
The ideal candidate has strong Python development skills, extensive API and backend testing experience, and a solid understanding of modern Agile software development practices. You will work closely with software engineers, product managers, and DevOps teams to ensure new features are highly testable and meet quality standards.
This position is particularly well suited for someone who enjoys solving complex testing challenges and improving automation across distributed systems.
Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain robust automated test suites for APIs, backend services, and distributed systems.

Develop automated tests using Python and Behave/BDD , with a focus on comprehensive coverage of new features and enhancements.

Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.

Enhance existing automation frameworks as system architecture and technology requirements evolve.

Collaborate with developers, product managers, and DevOps engineers to improve application testability and overall quality.

Manage defect workflows using tools such as JIRA , ensuring issues are clearly documented, tracked, and communicated.

Define and report meaningful QA metrics related to test automation, execution, coverage, and overall product quality.

Develop and maintain performance and load testing capabilities for critical backend services and system interactions.

Perform a broad range of testing, including functional, API, integration, automation, performance, and regression testing .

Help drive continuous improvement across QA processes, automation frameworks, tooling, and engineering best practices.
Qualifications
-
8+ years of QA engineering experience , with a strong emphasis on backend and API testing.
-
4+ years working within Agile SDLC environments , preferably with hands-on CI/CD experience.

Strong hands-on Python programming experience.

Experience with Behave/BDD , Test-Driven Development (TDD), and modern QA design patterns.

Strong experience testing REST APIs, backend microservices, and distributed systems .

Experience with blockchain technologies , including smart contracts, distributed ledgers, or blockchain node interaction, is preferred.

Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines , particularly GitLab CI/CD.

Experience with testing tools such as Behave, PyTest, Postman/REST tools, and JMeter or similar performance-testing platforms .

Proficiency with Git, GitLab, Jenkins, Docker , and related development/DevOps technologies.

Strong working knowledge of Python-based test automation.

Experience incorporating AI/AI-assisted development or testing tools is preferred.

Experience within banking, financial services, fintech, or other highly regulated environments is preferred.
