Full job description

OBD Calibration Engineer – Automotive Powertrain Overview / Summary

We are seeking an experienced OBD Calibration Engineer to support the development, validation, and delivery of production-ready On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) calibrations across gasoline, diesel, hybrid electric, and battery electric vehicle applications. The role involves collaborating with engineering, program, compliance, and simulation teams to deliver robust diagnostic solutions while meeting applicable regulatory, quality, and program requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop specialized expertise in major OBD monitors and diagnostic systems, providing technical support across vehicle programs and powertrain technologies.

  • Partner with program and calibration teams to deliver OBD calibrations, design verification (DV) signoffs, and other program deliverables on schedule and with quality.

  • Support OBD feature calibration and vehicle testing, including data collection and processing, to meet applicable monitoring requirements and address warranty improvement actions.

  • Analyze development, signoff, and quality data to identify hardware, software, and calibration concerns, determine root causes, and support effective solutions.

  • Develop and improve data-processing tools and scripts to enable efficient analysis, evaluate diagnostic robustness, and establish clear performance measures.

  • Improve calibration processes and documentation, including calibration guidelines, release error-proofing, and self-certification summary templates.

  • Collaborate with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), M-HIL, and computer-aided engineering (CAE) teams on virtual vehicle diagnostic trouble code (DTC) fault and clearing demonstrations.

  • Support OBD sensitivity validation and development testing, assess diagnostic robustness, and assist calibration teams with remote testing as needed.

  • Work with compliance teams to identify and resolve issues in production vehicle evaluation (PVE) design verification fault demonstrations and improve related processes.

  • Perform and document required OBD signoff and self-certification testing.

  • Assist with developing Diagnostic Code Demonstration Methods (DDMs).

  • Prepare OBD calibration communications and technical documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

  • At least 2 years of powertrain calibration and/or OBD calibration experience, including program delivery through launch and quality feedback.

  • Understanding of combustion engine operation and basic engine and powertrain control systems.

  • Understanding of worldwide OBD regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency with calibration tools, including ETAS and/or ATI.

  • Experience in vehicle emissions testing, OBD design verification testing, and on-road vehicle evaluation.

  • Experience in engine diagnostic and OBD feature calibration.

  • Strong data analysis skills, including knowledge of statistics and the ability to solve complex technical problems.

  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Interest in gasoline, diesel, hybrid electric, and battery electric vehicle technologies.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to remote locations for development testing as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of OBD calibration experience, including program delivery through launch and quality feedback.

  • Experience analyzing quality data, identifying root causes, and implementing fixes for field issues.

  • Experience with engine controls software, OBD, or functional safety.

  • Master's degree in Engineering.

  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink to analyze engineering data and review model-based controls software.

  • Ability to interpret C source code.

  • Experience developing data analysis scripts or tools using MATLAB or Python.

  • Python experience for data analysis, including data recorded using vehicle calibration tools such as ATI Vision or ETAS INCA.

  • Ability to read and understand engine control features coded in Simulink.
