Summary:

Under the direction of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President of Finance is responsible for all accounting functions, financial systems and control infrastructure necessary for managing financial operations across Northern Light Health. Northern Light Health is a single balance sheet organization, and this position is responsible for ensuring its reliability. The Vice President of Finance directs the monthly closing process and publishes interim financial reports on all hospitals, physician practices, ambulatory care centers, nursing homes, retail pharmacies, home care agencies, emergency transport services, and any other corporation controlled by Northern Light Health. Supervisory responsibilities include the central business office, and other system wide functions such as accounting, accounts payable, payroll, reimbursement and revenue cycle. In addition, the Vice President of Finance will serve as the number two corporate financial officer and will be responsible for representing the System at various Board Finance Committee Meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supervision and control over general accounting functions, accounts payable, payroll, revenue cycle and reimbursement activities, accounts receivable, and all statistical information gathering and reporting.

  • Maintains managerial control over the central business office operation to ensure that it is supervised properly and that all aspects of the operation are working smoothly.

  • Manages monthly, quarterly and annual reports through the development and enforcement of policy and through subordinate management and staff.

  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the financial operation for Northern Light Health to control receipts of revenue, expenditures of funds and conservation of assets.

  • Provide staffing support to the Northern Light Health Board’s Finance, Investment, and Audit Committees.

  • Presents Northern Light Health quarterly financial statements to the Northern Light Health Finance Committee.

  • As a member of the Home Office management team, assist others in understanding the economics of the business and to effectively incorporate financial considerations in their managerial activities.

  • Partner with Northern Light Health leaders and leadership across the system, in working with member organizations to appreciate the financial realities of the organization and the appropriate managerial disciplines necessary to yield sound operational results.

  • Assure the provision of “user friendly” management reporting tools that enable timely review of financial performance and adherence to budgeting standards in a fashion that is useful to management.

  • Develop a customer service oriented operating philosophy within all financial services departments reflecting a commitment to meeting the needs for accurate, timely and usable financial reports by others within the organization.

  • Develop and maintain financial reports that meet the needs of managers, executives and Boards.

  • Assure the financial integrity of the organization by developing and implementing a system of internal controls to safeguard assets, assess corporate financial performance against monthly targets and continually review financial systems to assure achievement of the organization’s philosophy and objectives.

  • Manages the external audit process to ensure that audited financials are released on a timely basis. Takes proactive measures to ensure that Northern Light Health financial policies are consistent with best practices and takes corrective action as necessary. Conducts System wide budget and actual spending analysis on a monthly basis and reports outcome to the Executive Management team and on · occasions to the respective Member Boards. Forecasts implications of changes in accounting or reimbursement and makes recommendations for policies that address both negative and positive trends.

  • Analyzes, monitors, and presents results of financial updates to Northern Light Health leadership and Executive members System wide. Develops various system wide reporting structures to ensure both executive and managerial staffs have information necessary to successfully execute both strategic and tactical plans.

  • Assesses and identifies potential problems and works with member organization CFOs and department heads on performance variances, capital project tracking, internal control weaknesses and spending issues.

  • Lead the design and administration of an integrated system wide statistical and financial reporting system.

  • Ensures compliance with all statutory regulations, procedures, interpretations of third party payers and requirements, including SOX, GAAP compliance, tax returns and statutory reports. Recommends methods for maximizing reimbursement with management.

  • Represents Northern Light Health at various Boards throughout the System.

  • Ensures that all financial transactions covered by minutes of the Board and Board Committees are properly executed and recorded.

  • Reviews new GAAP pronouncements for applicability to system, and documents the conclusions with an auditable note to file. Adjusts current policies and enacts new policies to ensure alignment with accounting standards.

  • Provides strategic and tactical support for accounting activities, including shared responsibilities with development on timely submissions and archived documentation of all grants and contract reporting

  • Play a key role in various assigned committees to ensure the best financial strategies are deployed.
