We are currently seeking a talented and motivated QA / Tester for a Full-Time position.
Job Summary:
The QA / Test Engineer will plan, execute, and document testing across an Appian low-code case management system, a Drupal public-facing filer portal, and a Kafka-based interagency data hub. Working under the direction of the Senior Lead Tester, this individual ensures every monthly production release meets functional, accessibility (Section 508), performance, and security expectations. The role spans the full test lifecycle—from writing test cases against user story acceptance criteria to facilitating User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with federal stakeholders—and places strong emphasis on automation and peak-season readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Test Planning & Design
-
Analyze user stories and acceptance criteria during backlog refinement to identify gaps and testability concerns before sprint commitment.
-
Develop and maintain test plans, test scenarios, test cases, and test data for new features, bug fixes, and technical debt items.
-
Produce test scripts and data to support sprint reviews and UAT with stakeholders and the Federal Project Manager.
Test Execution (Each Production Release)
-
Execute and coordinate System Integration, Regression, Smoke, and Functional testing across Appian, Drupal, and Data Hub components.
-
Support Performance/Load testing ahead of peak filing seasons and for newly developed medium and major features; capture response time, latency, and resource utilization metrics against SLAs.
-
Conduct Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility testing using customer-required tools; verify core 508 requirements pass at 100%.
-
Validate API, event-streaming, and data integrity for integrations with external and interagency systems.
-
Perform post-deployment smoke testing and support hypercare following production releases.
User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Support
-
Prepare UAT scenarios, schedule UAT kickoff sessions, and provide hands-on user support during UAT.
-
Troubleshoot UAT issues with developers and business analysts to move stories through acceptance efficiently.
Defect Management, Automation & Reporting
-
Log, categorize, and track defects in JIRA per customer-defined categories, maintaining end-to-end traceability (Roadmap → User Story → Task → Defect).
-
Build and maintain automated regression test suites; expand automation coverage wherever feasible to reduce cycle time.
-
Document test results and upload artifacts to the program repository; record changes in configuration management tools.
-
Contribute quality metrics (pass/fail rates, defect density, escaped defects) to sprint and release reporting.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (additional relevant experience may substitute).
-
3–5 years of software QA/testing experience on enterprise or government IT systems.
-
Hands-on experience with functional, regression, integration, smoke, and UAT testing in Agile/Scrum environments.
-
Experience testing web applications and low-code platforms (Appian strongly preferred).
-
Proficiency with JIRA (and test management add-ons such as Xray or Zephyr) for test case management and defect tracking.
-
Working knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility testing tools and techniques (e.g., ANDI, axe, screen readers).
-
Basic SQL skills for data validation against relational databases (Oracle preferred).
-
Ability to obtain and maintain a Federal Public Trust suitability determination.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Certification: DHS Trusted Tester Section 508 certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
-
Additional Certs: ISTQB Foundation Level, Appian Certified Associate Developer, or equivalent QA credential.
-
Automation: Experience with test automation frameworks (Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or Appian-compatible tooling such as FitNesse for Appian).
-
Performance: Experience with performance/load testing tools (JMeter, LoadRunner, k6, or similar).
-
Integration: Experience with API testing (Postman, REST Assured) and validating event-driven/Kafka data flows.
-
Domain: Experience supporting public-facing federal systems, ideally in labor, immigration, or benefits adjudication programs.
-
Innovation: Exposure to AI-assisted test generation or self-healing test automation tools.

We are an IT company with a unique mission—to make people the center of every federal IT solution. Our technologists have always gone the extra mile to help our federal clients succeed. And over the years, we saw a growing disconnect in how federal IT initiatives were built and managed. Time after time, programs failed because the focus was on the tools and products and not the people using them. Learn More. (https://nuaxis.com/about/)
