About IonQ:
IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world’s leading quantum platform and merchant supplier - delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. IonQ’s newest generation of quantum computers, the IonQ Tempo, is the latest in a line of cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners including Amazon Web Services, and AstraZeneca achieve 20x performance results and accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. In 2025, the company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance.
Headquartered in College Park, Maryland, IonQ has operations in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Washington, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Our quantum computing services are available through all major cloud providers, while we also meet the needs of networking and sensing customers across land, sea, air, and space. IonQ is making quantum platforms more accessible and impactful than ever before.
Role Overview Role: IonQ is building quantum computers that change which problems the world can solve. Our Control Electronics team creates every custom electronic device inside an IonQ system, taking the hardware, gateware, firmware and test behind the precision control boards around the ion trap from development through to production. As Technical Programme Manager for Electrical Engineering, you will drive the team's workstreams, working directly with the programme lead TPM in our Programme Management Office. You will sit at the centre of a cross-functional group of engineers and physicists, turning complex technical work into clear plans, measurable milestones and predictable delivery for our quantum computing roadmap. This is a hands-on role that takes real weight off our design engineers, so they can stay focused on design and the bench. Responsibilities: You will create and run the operating rhythm that keeps teams aligned and leaders informed: building development plans and an integrated schedule, tracking dependencies and surfacing risk early. You do not need to be the designer, but you need to be technical enough not to be fooled. When an estimate looks too long or a fix is always two days away, you will know which questions to ask, bring in the right architect or physicist, and turn the answer into a realistic plan with the right number of steps. Much of the help the team needs sits between functions. You will be the link between design engineering, procurement, materials management, supply chain, NPI and production, organising orders, parts and boards so that engineers handle the technical questions and the logistics are handled for them. When a component has a long lead time, you will understand its key characteristics well enough to help find an alternative. You will also keep embedded software, systems architecture and physics requirements in step with the electronics plan, represent the team's progress in programme meetings so that leads do not have to attend every one, and travel up to 20% of the time to partner sites as needed. Key responsibilities include:
- Drive the control electronics workstreams across hardware, gateware, firmware and test, owning schedule, resources, dependencies and stakeholder alignment
- Build and maintain a realistic integrated schedule, challenging estimates and surfacing technical and schedule risk early
- Coordinate orders, parts and boards with procurement, materials management and suppliers, and help resolve long lead and obsolete component issues
- Drive cross-functional execution with physics, systems, embedded software, NPI and production teams, taking issues to closure with clear mitigation plans
- Establish programme cadences and executive reporting, including dashboards, status updates and decision logs
Requirements: We are looking for a technically fluent programme manager with genuine hardware programme experience, who brings structure, pace and precision to complex electronics work. You will have run, or worked closely inside, the full hardware lifecycle, including firmware and lower level test, from requirements and design through fabrication, bring-up and revision into production. You will have enough exposure to firmware or RTL work to judge whether an estimate is realistic, even if you have not written that code yourself. You will bring a degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field, and an advanced degree is a plus. You will be comfortable working day to day with physicists and engineers, building trust quickly, and translating progress, risks and trade-offs into clear, decision-ready reporting for senior stakeholders. You thrive in ambiguity, can spot inconsistencies in messy data, and enjoy both sides of the job: getting into the detail of procurement and tracking, and knowing when to take a technical discussion offline with the right people. You’d be a great fit with:
- Experience as a technical programme manager delivering complex electronics hardware programmes from development into production
- A degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field
- Working knowledge of firmware, gateware or RTL development and lower level hardware test
- Hands-on experience managing procurement, component sourcing and supplier issues for prototype or low-volume builds
- Fluency with modern programme tools such as Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet and GitHub
