Magma Space Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer Washington, DC · Full time Company website Apply for Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer

We are seeking a Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer to serve as the technical owner of the electronics behind our magnetically levitated actuators and intelligent control systems. As we expand our team, you will lead the development and program strategy across our product lines: motor drive, active magnetic bearing (AMB) control electronics, power, sensing, and more. This is a hands-on leadership role that may be performed as an individual contributor or manger. You will make the key design decisions, lead design reviews, and mentor and manage less-senior electrical engineers. Level (Senior or Principal) will be determined by experience.

About Magma Space At Magma Space, we’re on a mission to deliver the most precise spacecraft pointing ever achieved. We are developing groundbreaking control actuators, including magnetically levitated reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes that drastically reduce onboard vibrations while delivering unmatched momentum. But our vision goes beyond hardware: we’re at the forefront of integrating AI-enhanced software for real-time environment monitoring with novel sensing capabilities. Our goal is to provide satellites with an unprecedented level of stability, agility, and accuracy, enhancing their capabilities like never before. We’re proud to be supported by NASA, the U.S. Space Force, and the broader Defense community, with upcoming orbital demonstrations on the ISS, commercial and DoD missions. Join us at Magma Space and make a lasting impact on the next generation of space missions!

Description Key Responsibilities

  • Own major elements of Magma’s electrical architectures across actuator product lines, from concept through flight units.
  • Lead full board development: schematics, layout review (Altium), bring-up, and qualification through flight.
  • Drive parts selection for radiation, derating, thermal, and outgassing requirements, including COTS vs. rad-hard strategy.
  • Define and maintain electrical interface control documents (ICDs) with spacecraft customers and primes.
  • Plan and support EMI/EMC, thermal-vacuum, and vibration test campaigns, including with external test labs.
  • Lead design reviews (PDR/CDR) and own key technical decisions for the electrical subsystem.
  • Collaborate closely with GNC, mechanical, and software teams on hardware–software integration.
  • Mentor and/or directly manage other electrical engineers.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for designs, tests, and customer deliverables.
  • Communicate technical concepts and strategy to internal and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Has taken at least one board from schematic through layout, bring-up, and testing to flight or qualified hardware.
  • Hands-on experience designing power electronics or motor drives.
  • Proficiency with Altium (or equivalent), SPICE, and MATLAB.
  • Hands-on lab skills: prototyping, soldering, and debugging with standard bench equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or asylee/refugee) due to ITAR/EAR export control requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with magnetic bearings or PCB motor development.
  • Exposure to FPGAs or high-speed digital/signal integrity design.
  • Radiation-tolerant design experience.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1540, or GSFC-STD-7000.
  • Experience leading or managing engineers.
  • Previous experience in a startup environment and/or aerospace industry.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology in the rapidly growing space industry.
  • A high-energy, in-person team in DC that loves building together: collaborative, ambitious, and mission-aligned.
  • Meaningful equity and real ownership: competitive salary plus an equity stake in a fast-growing, well-backed company.
  • Comprehensive benefits, including 401(k), health insurance with dental and vision, paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, paid parental leave, and a free on-site gym.
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Relocation assistance.
  • The chance to make a real, visible impact on the future of space exploration. Your work will go to space!

The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment third-party background check and reference check.
