Description

Texas A&M University School of Law invites applications for a full-time academic professional track (non-tenure) faculty position in our clinical program. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the Law School’s Tax Dispute Resolution Clinic – part of the IRS’ Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) program. Rank and title are open and will be commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. This position and is grant-funded. The anticipated start date would be Fall 2027.

The Director will be responsible for all aspects of the Clinic’s operations, including legal practice, working with other clinic attorneys, and teaching and supervising law students to represent low-income or ESL (English as a Second Language) taxpayers in matters before the IRS or the U.S. Tax Court.

Responsibilities :

  • Trains and supervises law students with practical instruction in federal tax law, IRS regulations and procedures, and Tax Court rules and procedures.

  • Provides law students with training in the core lawyering skills necessary to carry out effective client representation, including interviewing and counseling, fact investigation, strategy, negotiation, and advocacy.

  • Reviews, edits, and approves substantive written work product of the students.

  • Represents clients and handles client workload when students are not available.

  • Oversees educational activities for low-income and ESL taxpayers and conducts general advocacy for improvements to the tax administration process.

  • Ensures compliance with all requirements of the IRS LITC program, including numeric goals. Prepares grant applications, reports on financial and service results, and attends an annual national conference for LITC’s.

  • Upholds and enhances the reputation of Texas A&M Law and its clinical program, by working with clients, community partners, students, and the IRS in a respectful and ethical manner.

Provides organizational and administrative support in law clinic operations, including community and donor relations.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree

  • Active membership in the bar of any state or the District of Columbia (Texas has a waiver process for clinical faculty admission to the Texas Bar, without taking the Texas bar examination)

  • Working knowledge of federal tax procedure

  • Relevant legal practice experience

Preferred:

  • Three or more years of legal experience, including in federal tax controversy, is strongly preferred

  • Experience working with low-income or ESL taxpayers is strongly preferred

  • Experience teaching or supervising either law students or young lawyers is preferred

  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Tax Court is preferred

  • Prior clinical teaching experience is advantageous, but not essential
