Full job description

Saalex is seeking a Range Laser Safety Specialist in Corona, CA. The Range Laser Safety Specialist will support our current range assessment program supporting the U.S. Navy (USN) Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division (NSWC Corona). The candidate will support the development of new range complexes as required. The candidate will also be prepared to present on behalf of NSWC Corona at various meetings including the Laser Systems Safety Working Group and the NATO Laser Safety Panel. The selected candidate will support our Project Lead as part of a highly specialized team. This position will provide range evaluation and development support as well as expertise on running a range from a systems perspective. The work supports U.S. and Foreign military test, evaluation training programs at both on-site (office) and off-site (fieldwork) levels.

Position Type: Part-Time/On Call

Salary: $85k-$115k (depending on experience)

Work Location: Hybrid remote/in-office (see on-site requirements below)

This position is 60% telework, 10% on-site at NSWC Corona, and 30% travel. Travel may encompass both national and international venues. Due to the percentage of telecommuting, exceptional personal discipline and time management skills are required. Candidate is not required to live near NSWC Corona.

Essential Functions:

  • The Specialist will complete in-the-field surveys of various test, evaluation and training ranges, which may include extensive hiking, flights in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, ship/boat transport, and ATV use.

  • Participate in site surveys and provide in-briefs and out-briefs to the range personnel. Ensure that field notes, photo records and GIS/GPS data are collected.

  • Review documents including range survey reports and Naval, DoD and NATO instructions

  • Create plans to develop new range

  • Report on analysis results and produce reports as required, including ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

  • Maintain contacts within the DoD and NATO

  • Interact with senior level customers and collaborators both domestically and internationally

  • Provide laser safety instruction as required

  • Develop or introduce new technologies and processes to improve workflows.

  • Provide laser safety consulting to customers with diverse operational needs.

  • Document and analyze requirements from users and managers and translate them into application, functionality, and data requirements.

  • Interpret data and research geographical information.

  • Assist with training and technical support of end users and stakeholders.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

Required:

  • Must possess an active U.S. passport or be able to obtain one.

Desired:

  • Experience as a command Laser Systems Safety Officer for both laboratory and range facilities.

  • Experience with in air, over water and underwater uses of laser systems.

  • Experience with bringing laser systems to the Navy Laser Safety Review Board.

  • U.S. Navy TLSO/RLSS/LSS certification.

  • Experience creating and running test and evaluation laser ranges and laser firing areas.

  • Experience as a Navy laser safety instructor.

  • Experience with RDT&E laser systems development

  • Knowledge of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation principles.

  • Experience with military training procedures and documentation.

  • Experience working with military, federal and foreign partner agencies.

  • Ability to pass U.S. Navy NASTP (Naval Aviation Survival Training Program) Class 3 Non-Aircrew aviation physiology and water survival training. (preferred not required).

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree required

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant laser safety experience

  • Experience as in systems safety, systems engineering and test engineering desirable.

  • Experience working with the DoD and NATO communities desirable.

Security Clearance:

Must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance; an interim Secret clearance is preferred. Requirements to obtain a clearance include U.S. citizenship, a security investigation, and other applicable requirements.
