Family Medicine Clerkship Director (Med Clinical Prof-Med Series)

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Medicine (SoM) is the only medical school in the CUNY system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY SoM graduated its first MD class in 2020. In addition, the CUNY SoM offers a two-year Physician Assistant (PA) program to prepare health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Our mission is 1) to provide access to medical education to talented youth from historically underrepresented in backgrounds in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities and 2) to perform innovative research in community health and biomedicine.

As a community-based medical school, CUNY SOM delivers clinical education through partnerships with affiliated health institutions across the New York metropolitan area. Based at the Harlem campus, the Family Medicine Clerkship Director oversees clerkship implementation, serving as a liaison among students, faculty, and school administration. The Clerkship Director also collaborates with site directors and affiliate faculty to organize and implement teaching and assessment across all clinical sites.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Clinical Professor – Medical Series, a full-time, non-tenure-track position in the Department of Clinical Medicine, reporting to the Department Chair. The Clerkship Director will join a team of mission-driven educators and scholars and will have access to collaborative and mentorship opportunities across departments, including Medical Education, Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM), Library Sciences, and Molecular, Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (MCBS). Opportunities are also available to leverage the institution’s research infrastructure in support of scholarly interests.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a standardized didactic curriculum in Family Medicine for third-year medical students across all clinical sites.

  • Lead interactive, student-centered educational sessions (typically one afternoon per week).

  • Direct the simulation-based end-of-clerkship OSCE at the NYSIM Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

  • Ensure alignment of teaching with national curricular guidelines, CUNY SOM Educational Program Objectives (EPOs), Foundational Competencies (FCs), and clerkship-level learning objectives.

  • Chair Clerkship Grading Committee meetings, oversee grading processes, and provide feedback to clinical site directors on evaluation practices.

  • Conduct periodic clinical site visits to ensure consistency in student experiences and assessment practices.

  • Oversee advanced clinical rotations, including fourth-year Family Medicine electives and sub-internships.

  • Participate in institutional committees (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee).

  • Mentor students and serve as a faculty advisor for student organizations, including the Family Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG).

  • Contribute to broader medical education efforts, including teaching in courses such as Practice of Medicine (POM), Organ Systems, Anatomy, Clinical Skills Assessment, and Introduction to Internship (ITI), as well as being the course director for an annual one week course for M3/M4 medical students.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Clinical Medicine department

This full-time position includes dedicated time for clinical practice, with flexible scheduling to accommodate clinical responsibilities. The institution provides support for professional development, including participation in regional and national medical education conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical degree from an accredited university.

  • Must be a board-certified Family Medicine physician.

  • Licensed or license-eligible in New York State.

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a Clerkship Director or in educational leadership, teaching medical students and/or residents.

  • Skilled educator with the ability to perform bedside and classroom teaching.

  • Strong administrative skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in faculty, curriculum, and assessment development and in advising medical students.

  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize advising practices and principles that inclusively and equitably serve a diverse student population in a variety of settings.

  • Demonstrated record of professional achievement and a willingness to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds for the good of the institution.

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural and structural competence in a learning environment.
