Full job description

Muscatine, IA, USA | Hourly | 17.00-19.00 per hour Pay depends on year in school. | Temporary

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires MPW to have an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for every chemical that employees are exposed to. This project will audit MPW's SDS management system to verify that the appropriate SDS is available for each chemical used throughout the organization.

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Management internship does not require prior knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for Hazard Communication. The internship will help the selected person gain knowledge of those regulatory requirements in the workplace. The intern will have access to support and resources as needed while frequently working independently.

The intern will focus on updating MPW's cloud-based SDS catalog. This will include training on the SDS catalog system. The intern will be responsible for searching for materials at MPW facilities and cross-referencing them with SDSs. The intern will use a laptop to enter and maintain data within an Excel spreadsheet. Through this process, chemicals will be cataloged by SKU (when available), product name, manufacturer, SDS, quantity, department, and location. SDSs will be updated as needed. If a material is identified without a corresponding SDS, the intern will research and obtain the appropriate SDS. If an SDS exists in the catalog and the associated material is no longer used at MPW, the SDS will be archived. Chemicals found and no longer used will be coordinated with Environmental Affairs for disposal.

Job Description:

  • Verify chemicals currently in use throughout MPW facilities.

  • Verify SDSs are available for all chemicals.

  • Identify SDSs that can be archived.

  • Determine and document chemical locations (Administrative Offices, Generation, Labs and Water Treatment Areas).

  • Coordinate with Environmental Department to dispose of chemicals that are no longer used.

  • Verify SKU numbers and identify opportunities to assign SKUs to products that do not currently have them.

  • Create and add QR codes to chemical storage areas.

  • Research the chemical management system approval process for purchasing new products and ensuring proper tracking and SKU verification.

Resources:

Safety & Training will train and support the intern and help answer questions as they come up. Daily check-ins will be required with a weekly review of the work being performed. The intern will also collaborate with Field crews, Power Plant personnel, and Supply Chain Services throughout the process.

Time Frame:

Intern is projected to work 40 hours/week for the entire summer (12 weeks, Approximately May – August). Vacation time can be scheduled within that time frame.
