Position: Senior Design Engineer (Engineer III)

Location: Newberg, Oregon, USA
JOB SUMMARY
Specialized Fabrication Equipment Group, Inc. is an engineering-based company developing standard and custom machining, welding and valve testing equipment for the global marketplace. The fast-paced environment has a team of highly skilled individuals with years of experience in product development of portable machining, welding and valve testing.
The Senior Design Engineer III shall have experience developing highly complex electromechanical systems for use in heavy industrial global applications. The role requires leading design projects from the start and through completion, supporting product documentation and collaborating in a cross functional team environment using formal product development methodologies. The applicable candidate must have the ability to effectively foresee product risks and mitigate them to ensure an effective product launch as well as ensure operator safety during operation. The position will require the ability to define, design, test and launch new products into the marketplace quickly and effectively with little or no rework. The candidate shall have hands-on experience in product testing, troubleshooting and ensuring the product is meeting all advertised requirements. Experience in use of computational engineering tools, finite element analysis, tolerance stack up analysis and other analysis tools is preferred. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Shall be a strong engineer with the ability to evaluate and develop complex mechanisms with robust precision movements for various applications.

Shall be capable of modeling concepts and detailed designs using CAD software (Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks preferred).

Shall be able to translate customer requirements into a product specification with the intent of implementation into formal design documentation.
-
Shall be able to collaborate with a cross-functional product development team to meet or exceed the customer/market requirements and optimize costs and lead-times to market.

Shall be a critical thinker with the ability to quickly evaluate risks of project deliverables as well as design solution features vs. requirements.

May have experience in evaluating product risks through formal tools such as DFMEA or equivalent.

May have experience in designing large fabrications with high tolerance features to support integration with electro-mechanical mechanisms.

May have experience with sizing appropriate system power sources; hydraulic, pneumatic, AC Electrics, DC Electrics, etc.

May have experience in properly sizing components to ensure stress, strain and fatigue of components are within working range of the product application.

May have experience generating prints per ASME or ANSI standards with effective use of GD&T.

Possess strong verbal, written, and cross functional communications skills. Must be able to work with cross-functional Product Development Team (PDT) to ensure product features are defined, designed and validated prior to product launch.

Offer creative and innovative suggestions for solutions to problems while supporting new standard product definition requirements.

Shall have experience working directly with customers/end users to capture product requirements as well as understand market requirements.

Work proactively with operations to ensure customer expectations are exceeded through Stage gate product development processes, resulting in a robust manufacturable design.

Capable of managing several projects at once, requiring strong time management skills.

Shall be able to complete multiple component tolerance stack-up analysis for large assemblies.

Shall have experience completing formal root cause analysis of quality issues and support eliminating equipment down-time during the life of the product.

Provides direction and required details for layouts and drafting to machine designer/drafter team.

Provides engineering-based project management communication with the program office.

Provides overall systems solution focus based on customer/market requirements.

Effective customer communication (voice of customer) to understand complete application/needs.

Effectively considers implications of machine configuration on system/operator safety.

Supports final product testing/demonstrations with hands on approach and specification focus.

Able to support customer on-site testing (when necessary) and provide operational support in a real-time environment

Defines Verification and Validation steps through detailed product specification and product testing.

Capable of providing customer training, when necessary, on new products.

Capable of generating product Bills of Materials and Item Cards in ERP system; Syteline, Sage or Intuitive.

Understands and abides by sound design for manufacturability principles.

Applies lean principles to workflow/project management for process improvements.

Establish partnerships with major accounts with an interest of solving their product needs and supporting the Sales team with technical solutions.

Capable of working with 3rd party engineering firms with an interest of expanding engineering capacity when necessary.

Ability to effectively conduct product and system risk assessments; formal and informal.

Handles stress in a professional manner, demonstrates the ability to get along with others, demonstrates successful attendance and punctuality, and works overtime / extra hours as required to meet spikes in business.

Travel to gather critical information to meet customer and business needs is required (passport needed). (Less than 10% travel, primarily domestic, international travel required on occasion.)

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree in Engineering or higher; 8-10 years of related design experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven ability to lead, manage, and complete large and complex projects.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Excellent skills in CAD, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Office and travel have moderate noise levels. Machine/Product demonstrations and customer visits can have loud noise levels.
To meet customer requirements the employee may be asked to travel in an airplane and/or vehicle to get to customer work sites. At times, this position walks on or through high elevations, underground and/or confined spaces, around high voltage and in heavy industrial and/or construction work environments such as bridges, dams, mines, power plants, shipyards, etc. The employee must be able to work in hazardous working environments with possible extreme working conditions to complete customer training and/or applications support.
Noise levels may be extreme and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and usage is driven by customer requirements. Other required PPE includes, but is not limited to, steel toe boots, hardhat and safety glasses. Customer working environments can be extreme in regards to height, confined space, physical requirements and hazards.
