Full job description

We are seeking a skilled Network Engineer to support enterprise infrastructure and networking operations for a large federal healthcare program. The Network Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure and resilient network solutions that ensure high availability, performance, and scalability. This role will work closely with infrastructure, cloud, and security teams to integrate on-premise and cloud environments, supporting mission-critical applications and services. The candidate must reside within the continental US. Location: Remote (with occasional travel as required) Responsibilities:

  • Design, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.

  • Support WAN, LAN, and wireless networking solutions across hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.

  • Implement and optimize network security controls, including firewall rules, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and segmentation strategies.

  • Manage F5 and other load balancing platforms to ensure high availability and application delivery.

  • Perform network monitoring, traffic analysis, and root cause investigations using tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, and Wireshark.

  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure compliance with federal standards, including NIST and Zero Trust principles.

  • Support network upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives, including cloud-based networking in Azure and hybrid environments.

  • Create and maintain detailed network diagrams, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.

  • Provide Tier III escalation support, troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, and resolve incidents across enterprise environments.

  • Participate in change control processes, risk assessments, and disaster recovery planning.

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to team members. Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics engineering, or another engineering or technical discipline. Eight (8) years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for the degree.

  • 5+ years of experience.

  • Hands-on experience as a Network Engineer supporting enterprise-scale environments.

  • Expertise in configuring and managing Cisco and Juniper routers/switches.

  • Strong experience with firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Checkpoint, Cisco ASA) and VPN solutions.

  • Proficiency in load balancing technologies, including F5 LTM/GTM/DNS, with the ability to troubleshoot persistence, SSL offload, and traffic steering.

  • Knowledge of WAN optimization, MPLS, QoS, and advanced routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP).

  • Familiarity with cloud networking (Azure, AWS, or similar), hybrid connectivity, and software-defined networking.

  • Strong understanding of network security principles, including Zero Trust, encryption, and segmentation.

  • Experience with network monitoring and analysis tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, and Wireshark.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Additional Qualifications:

  • Relevant certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIE, PCNSE, or F5-CTS.

  • Experience supporting healthcare IT systems, EHR platforms, or large-scale federal data environments.

  • Familiarity with VA systems, policies, and compliance frameworks.

  • Experience using AI-assisted tools (for example, GitHub Copilot) to write and maintain network automation scripts and configuration templates (for example, Python or Ansible), including reviewing and validating AI-generated configurations in a lab or test environment before deployment.

  • Experience using AI-driven monitoring and AIOps capabilities to detect anomalies, correlate events, and speed root cause analysis across network monitoring data.

  • Experience using AI tools to analyze logs, packet captures, and traffic data during troubleshooting, with the engineer confirming findings before acting on them.

  • Experience using AI tools to draft and maintain network documentation, including diagrams, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.

  • Understanding of the network and security requirements for hosting and accessing AI services, such as secure connectivity to cloud AI endpoints, data egress controls, and segmentation.

  • Familiarity with secure and responsible AI use in federal environments, including using only agency-approved AI tools, never entering network configurations, credentials, or PHI/PII into unapproved tools, and following VA and federal AI guidance. Benefits:
