Why work here HDVI is building the industry-defining commercial auto insurance company for the next 100 years. The $50 billion commercial auto industry hasn’t seen real innovation for decades and is broken in a number of ways, creating a significant opportunity for HDVI. HDVI has a senior management team with experience building innovative insurance and logistics companies from zero to $1B+ enterprises and deep expertise in trucking insurance. The HDVI Team is values-driven, data-driven, ambitious, and collaboratively minded, with a diverse background of experiences and skills in the insurance and logistics industries. We like challenges and building solutions that improve the quality of life for our customers. We offer generous benefits, including health, dental, vision, 401k match, flexible work environment, and unlimited PTO.

About the Role As a Senior Liability Adjuster, you will work closely with HDVI’s Claims and Fleet Services Teams. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of handling all aspects of Commercial Trucking claims inclusive of but not limited to Third Party Bodily Injury, Third Party Auto Property Damage, First Party Auto Property Damage, Cargo, Truckers General Liability and First Party Medical. You will be responsible for influencing and providing claim resolution and tactical guidance to both internal and external customers in order to achieve world class claims outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Independently investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve complex commercial auto liability claims, including bodily injury, attorney-represented, litigated, high-severity, and large-loss exposures from assignment through final resolution.
  • Conduct comprehensive coverage, liability, causation, damages, and exposure investigations, including comparative negligence analysis, utilizing police reports, witness statements, medical documentation, accident reconstruction, telematics, dash-camera footage, GPS/ELD data, and other available evidence to support well-reasoned claim decisions.
  • Manage high-exposure and large-loss claims proactively, identifying adverse development and severity indicators early, escalating claims in accordance with established protocols, and developing comprehensive action plans addressing investigative needs, litigation considerations, reserves, settlement opportunities, resolution strategies, and next steps.
  • Evaluate complex bodily injury damages and establish appropriate reserves, including analysis of medical records, treatment, causation, permanency, future medical exposure, wage loss, and other damages while establishing, evaluating, and adjusting loss and expense reserves based on expected ultimate claim exposure and evolving claim circumstances.
  • Negotiate complex settlements and drive effective claim resolution, working with claimants, plaintiff attorneys, insurers, and other involved parties within established authority while identifying and pursuing subrogation, contribution, indemnification, and other recovery opportunities.
  • Manage litigated claims and defense counsel strategy, including legal budgets, discovery, depositions, expert selection, mediation, settlement conferences, and trial preparation, while coordinating the appropriate use of Rapid Response, SIU, accident reconstruction, independent medical evaluations, investigators, experts, and other specialized resources.
  • Participate in large-loss reviews, severity roundtables, reserve reviews, mediations, and claim strategy discussions, providing Claims leadership with well-supported recommendations regarding exposure, reserves, litigation strategy, settlement opportunities, and overall claim direction.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource, mentor, and escalation point, providing less-experienced adjusters with guidance on investigations, liability analysis, reserving, negotiations, litigation strategy, and Claims Best Practices while assisting Claims leadership with complex file reviews, training, quality initiatives, process improvement, and identification of emerging claim trends.
  • Maintain proactive communication, comprehensive documentation, and regulatory compliance, working effectively with insureds, claimants, attorneys, brokers, defense counsel, vendors, and internal business partners while ensuring claim files meet Claims Best Practices, regulatory requirements, service expectations, and established authority levels.
  • Effectively manage a complex claim inventory with a high degree of independent judgment, ownership, and accountability, meeting expectations for quality, productivity, customer service, cycle time, reserve accuracy, financial stewardship, and claim outcomes while maintaining a strong internal and external customer focus.

What You Have

  • 5+ years of commercial auto liability claims experience, including significant experience independently handling bodily injury, attorney-represented, litigated, complex, large-loss, and high-severity claims from investigation through resolution.
  • College education or an equivalent combination of education and relevant claims experience preferred, along with an active Adjuster’s License and the ability to obtain and maintain all required state licenses.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial auto claims, including coverage analysis, liability investigation, negligence principles, damages evaluation, reserving, settlement negotiation, litigation management, commercial trucking operations, motor carrier exposures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large-loss and high-exposure claims, including developing comprehensive claim strategies, evaluating exposure, establishing and adjusting reserves, preparing settlement recommendations, participating in mediations and settlement conferences, and managing claims through litigation.
  • Strong bodily injury evaluation capabilities, including analysis of medical records, treatment, causation, permanency, future medical exposure, wage loss, and other damages necessary to accurately assess claim value and potential adverse development.
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and vendor-management experience, including negotiating directly with plaintiff attorneys and managing defense counsel, experts, investigators, accident reconstruction professionals, and other specialized resources throughout litigation, mediation, settlement, and claim resolution.
  • Experience handling complex commercial trucking exposures, including large deductibles, Independent Owner-Operators (IOOs), and other commercial trucking arrangements, with the ability to utilize telematics, dash-camera footage, GPS/ELD information, crash data, and other evidence to support coverage, liability, causation, and severity assessments.
  • Strong reserving, analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to recognize adverse development, adjust reserves as claim exposure evolves, and make sound decisions in complex or ambiguous claim situations.
  • Demonstrated senior-level communication, organization, and leadership capabilities, including managing multiple complex claims, competing priorities, and critical deadlines; clearly communicating claim evaluations, strategies, and recommendations to leadership and business partners; and serving as a technical resource and mentor to less-experienced claims professionals.
  • Strong internal and external customer focus and technology proficiency, with a commitment to responsive, professional, fair, and consistent claim handling; proficiency with Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat, and claims management technology, with Snapsheet or similar platform experience preferred.
