Full job description

About Scale Justice and Reclamo AI Scale Justice (formerly known as Pro Bono Net) is a leading nonprofit access to justice innovator with a 25-year history of impact. Our digital tools and partnerships help people navigate the law, access justice, and live more secure lives. We are building a future where the power of the law belongs to everyone. Learn more at https://scalejustice.org Justicia Lab, a program of Scale Justice, builds technology and community-driven tools that help immigrants and low-wage workers access justice. Its flagship project, Reclamo AI, is a multilingual, mobile-first AI assistant that helps workers, especially women, understand their workplace rights, document violations, and take action to recover stolen wages. Built with legal aid partners, Reclamo AI cuts the time to start a wage claim from days to minutes. We are scaling Reclamo AI from a proven New York pilot to multi-state and, ultimately, national infrastructure for wage justice. About the role The Legal Engineer works closely with Scale Justice’s Chief Innovation Officer and Reclamo AI Program lead and with the Head of Product. You will be their thought partner on the product's legal design. Your job is to turn how wage claims actually get recovered and filed into digital experiences that workers can use on their own or with an advocate. You will learn the workflows of employment attorneys, legal aid staff, and worker organizers, then redesign them for an AI-enabled tool. You will make sure Reclamo AI stays legally accurate as it expands into new states. And you will bring new ideas for how technology can help workers get paid what they are owed. This role blends employment law, user experience design, and AI product work. This is a grant-funded position with an initial term of approximately three years. We intend to pursue continued funding, though continuation beyond the grant period cannot be guaranteed. What you'll do Legal workflow design and translation

  • Map how attorneys, legal aid staff, and worker organizers screen, document, and file wage claims, through interviews, shadowing, and case review.
  • Turn those workflows into product logic: intake questions, eligibility rules, decision trees, document checklists, and claim-filing flows.
  • Design how Reclamo AI hands workers off to legal partners, so referrals arrive complete and ready to act on.

Legal accuracy and AI quality

  • Own the legal accuracy of Reclamo AI's guidance on wage-and-hour issues, including minimum wage, overtime, unpaid wages, and retaliation.
  • Write and refine the prompts, knowledge content, and source material behind the AI assistant.
  • Build and maintain test cases and evaluation sets that check the AI's answers for accuracy, completeness, and bias. Work with Scale Justice technical staff on evaluation and testing protocols.
  • Lead state-law adaptation as Reclamo AI expands beyond New York, working with contract employment attorneys in each new state.

User experience and co-design

  • Co-design features with workers, worker centers, and legal aid partners, and help plan usability tests and focus groups.
  • Write clear, plain-language, multilingual content that makes legal concepts understandable and actionable.
  • Work with the Product Managers, developers, and the brand and design team to move ideas from concept to launch.

Partnership and strategy

  • Serve as the main legal and design point of contact for attorneys, legal aid organizations, and worker organizers in each state.
  • Act as a thought partner to the Chief Innovation Officer on product direction, new ideas, and partnerships.
  • Contribute to funder reports, presentations, and evaluation of Reclamo AI's impact.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • A JD, or at least 4 years of equivalent experience in employment law, wage-and-hour practice, legal aid, or worker-rights advocacy.
  • Working knowledge of how wage claims are investigated, documented, and filed, through agencies, courts, or both.
  • A track record of improving a legal process, tool, or service, such as building intake systems, templates, or self-help resources.
  • Comfort using AI tools and curiosity about how they can be designed responsibly for low-income users.
  • Excellent plain-language writing and the ability to explain legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Experience working with community organizations, worker centers, or directly with low-wage and immigrant workers.

Preferred

  • Bar admission, ideally in New York.
  • Professional fluency in Spanish. Other languages spoken by low-wage workers are a plus.
  • Experience in legal design, legal technology, product management, or UX research.
  • Experience writing prompts, building evaluation sets, or testing the accuracy of AI or automated legal tools.
  • Familiarity with employment law in states beyond New York.
  • Lived experience with the barriers that low-wage and immigrant workers face.

If you meet most but not all of these qualifications, we still encourage you to apply. Location: Flexible within the United States. While this is a remote position, candidates in the New York City area are preferred due to periodic in-person coworking and team collaboration sessions. Remote candidates are encouraged to apply. Scale Justice is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. We welcome applicants of all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, national origins, ages, abilities, marital statuses, veteran statuses, and other protected characteristics. We strongly encourage candidates from historically underrepresented communities to apply. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request for applicants with disabilities or religious needs. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews will be scheduled as qualified candidates are identified.
