Full job description

Location: Binghamton, NY Category: Faculty Job Type: Full-time Posted On: Wed Oct 14 2026 Job Description:

Associate or Full Professors in Cellular and Developmental Biology

The Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University (SUNY) invites applications for two faculty positions at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the fields of Cellular and Developmental Biology. We seek innovative investigators who will lead internationally recognized, extramurally funded research programs focused on fundamental biological mechanisms underlying cellular and developmental responses to physiological and pathological stressors. Priority will be given to candidates whose work complements established research clusters in the department, while intersecting with the biomedical interests of our pre-health focused students. We are particularly interested in researchers examining the molecular drivers of tolerance and resilience to metabolic, environmental, physiological, or infectious stressors. Ideal candidates will leverage cutting-edge genomic, molecular, and genome-engineering technologies in genetically and experimentally tractable eukaryotic systems to uncover fundamental biological processes that enable living systems to withstand severe disturbance and affect health outcomes.

Research areas of particular relevance include, but are not limited to, the impacts of stress on:

  • Mechanistic & Systems Physiology: Cellular signaling, homeostatic adaptation, and stress response pathways.

  • Functional Genomics & Epigenomics: Gene expression networks, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNA regulation underlying variation in cell differentiation and tissue and organ development with implications for complex trait development or regenerative medicine

  • Comparative Stress Biology: Uncovering universal cellular and tissue defense programs or discovering unique adaptive mechanism for resilience in the face of extreme conditions

  • Translational Target Discovery from Stress Response Pathways: Fundamental research with direct implications for improving therapeutic, clinical, and agricultural applications.

Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a rigorous, highly productive research program that synergizes with established interdisciplinary research clusters within the department and across the university. As senior hires, successful candidates are expected to contribute to mentorship of junior faculty and be instrumental to future hiring initiatives as the department seeks to grow the tenure-track ranks over the next 5 years. Our department is deeply committed to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians. Thus, major expectations of these positions include training and mentoring PhD students and undergraduate researchers, as well as contributing to the department's teaching mission by instructing courses in their areas of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department of Biological Sciences spans perspectives from molecules to ecosystems, and we seek candidates whose health-aligned research and teaching programs will find an intellectual home within this broad and integrative setting. The building housing Biological Sciences is currently undergoing full renovation and will provide state-of-the-art research facilities to support existing and new faculty.

The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to equity and inclusion and is actively working to increase diversity amongst its faculty. Members of groups historically underrepresented in biology and those from non-traditional backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through research, teaching, or service will be valued.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in biology or a related field

  • Faculty experience at a research-focused institution

  • Successful track record of extramural funding as a faculty member

  • Record of peer-reviewed publication in the fields of either cell biology or developmental biology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring graduate students

  • Teaching experience at the university level

Please be advised that H1B visa sponsorship may not be available for this position.
