Assistant Professor - Cinema Studies

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Cinema Studies, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2027. The Department offers bachelor's degrees in Cinema Studies (with tracks in Production and Critical Studies) and Communication (with tracks in Corporate Communication, Design and Digital Media, Journalism, and Media Studies). The Department has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry and welcomes candidates whose work crosses traditional boundaries.

We seek a candidate with the range to teach across both production and critical studies, grounded in a strong command of film and media history and theory. Given the rapidly evolving digital media landscape, the ideal candidate engages with diverse modes of production and brings a deep understanding of the craft alongside its social, cultural, political, and aesthetic dimensions. Candidates whose scholarship focuses on national, global, diasporic, African American, or LGBTQ+ cinemas are also welcome to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold an MFA or PhD. ABD candidates are eligible provided the degree is conferred prior to appointment.

Preferred qualifications include:

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching as well as an active and developing research and creative practice. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach and mentor students in narrative, documentary, and experimental film and video production. The successful candidate will be expected to teach across these areas, advise senior production projects, and contribute actively to curriculum development and program review.

COMPENSATION

$73,294 - $85,556
