Brief Description of Duties:

SUNY Morrisville is seeking a twelve-month position in the Equine Science Department assisting instructional support for various labs in breeding, stable/farm management and rehabilitation, along with day-to-day management of program horses and facility, and supervision of the students during barn duty or during summer internships. This position works as a team member in the strategic planning process with other faculty and staff members that work in Equine Science Department.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with or lead as Instructional support of various Equine Science Courses: Breeding and Rehabilitation Therapies Concentrations on Tuesday-Saturday work week.

  • Mentoring, assisting and providing oversite of student activities

  • Barn duty (Farm Practicum) and chores in coordination with faculty/staff.

  • In the absence of students, ensure that the barn chores, horse management or rehabilitation therapies are completed - esp. during Weekends, School Breaks & Holidays

  • Providing leadership to program areas, training of students and working with students throughout the year and during summer internships

  • Ability to work with fellow equine science faculty and staff to develop and fulfill programmatic outcomes along with other programs on campus

  • Assist with or lead in daily care and maintenance of college, rehabilitation and client horses, basic veterinary care and facilities care as necessary.

  • Assist faculty/staff or lead laboratory courses in rehabilitation, training or handling of breeding animals

  • Incorporate principles and practices of sound equine management as well as demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to work as a team member

  • Assisting with clients and appropriate professionals, including but not limited to:

  • Veterinarians, Farriers, USTA technicians, Breeding Farms, Breed Organizations and Trucking firms.

  • Aid in development of long-term and short-term plans for the Equine Science program and develop strategies for changes and improvements in recruitment, outreach, record keeping, operations, facilities and equipment

  • Ability to operate equipment a plus:

  • Operate tractor, skid steer, dragging arenas, mowers, manure spreader

  • Potential to earn a CDL or has a CDL

  • Potential to earn a license for pesticide application on animals

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelor degree in equine science or related field, prefer Bachelor + Licensed Vet Tech Degrees, would consider Associate degree with 8 years practical experience in Breeding, Rehabilitation or Horse management.

  • The successful candidate should have strong horse handling skills regarding safe handling of young, mature, or injured horses, be a reliable and effective communicator, and have experience in instruction on horse management or therapeutic rehabilitation modalities.

  • An appreciation of technical education at the Associate and Bachelor of Technology degree levels.

  • Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor in occasional inclement weather conditions and be willing to work on weekends.

  • Should also be willing to travel occasionally for recruitment events or expos.
