What We Offer

The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is the physician executive responsible for clinical informatics strategy across Novant Health. Reporting to the Chief Digital and Information Officer with a dotted line to the CMO , the CHIO leads clinical informatics across the medical group, acute care facilities, ambulatory settings, nursing informatics, digital health, clinical analytics, and innovation.

The CHIO will lead optimization and governance of Epic (Dimensions) and other clinical technologies, focusing on improving clinical workflows, quality and safety, clinician experience, and patient care. The role will establish priorities for clinical technology investments and ensure effective implementation and adoption across the organization.

As Novant Health grows, the CHIO will also lead the clinical informatics aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and expansion, helping integrate new facilities and providers into enterprise systems, workflows, and standards.

Working closely with clinical, operational, and technology leaders, the CHIO will connect care delivery and technology and help shape how data, digital health, virtual care, and emerging technologies support Novant Health’s clinical strategy.

Key responsibilities

  • Set and execute the enterprise clinical informatics strategy across clinical, nursing, digital health, analytics, and other informatics domains.

  • Lead Epic (Dimensions) optimization and governance, including clinical workflow design, enhancements, and prioritization.

  • Establish governance and priorities for clinical technology and data initiatives, ensuring clinician needs are reflected in enterprise decisions.

  • Improve clinical workflows and technology usability to support quality, safety, clinician efficiency, productivity, and well-being.

  • Lead the implementation and adoption of clinical technologies, including clinical pathways, decision support, and other tools that support care delivery.

  • Lead clinical informatics integration for mergers, acquisitions, new facilities, and affiliated providers.

  • Advance clinical analytics and ensure quality, safety, performance, and regulatory requirements are incorporated into EHR workflows and operations.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and advance digital health, virtual care, patient engagement, and other technology-enabled care models.

  • Build and lead a strong clinical informatics team that supports clinicians across the enterprise.

  • Develop strong relationships across clinical, operational, technology, and executive leadership to drive alignment, innovation, and change.

What You'll Do

Essential Functions • Follows established Novant Health and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality. • Provides the strategic context for clinical informatics, creating and maintaining a strong relationship between fellow executives and clinical users. • Helps lead clinical systems and data governance initiatives with senior DPS leaders. • Spearheads analytics-based initiatives by partnering with the DPS Steering Committee ensuring that clinicians’ needs and expectations are incorporated into the business initiatives. • Involved in executive level strategy discussions and assuming responsibility for acute care clinical systems strategic organizational initiatives. • Acts as a liaison between clinicians and DPS - communicates, interprets, and translates clinicians’ needs for DPS and in turn facilitates clinicians’ understanding of digital products and services and manages their expectations of new systems; incorporates clinical workflow planning and redesign into EHR design and optimization. • Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences, and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems. • Works in concert with DPS to design and implement systems supporting patient care and research activities. • Leads design of clinical pathway models with physician, nursing, and administrative leadership, and will assist in modification of these models to gain maximum efficacy and support for patient care and research protocols. • Leads development of clinical "rules" supporting patient care and protocol research as well as the design of clinical system features supporting protocol management and the use of the system to leverage the clinicians' time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians. • Ensures clinical quality (regulatory reporting and metrics) and patient safety are coordinated with EHR workflows and operations.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: Medical Doctor, required.

  • Experience: 3 Years experience must have a strong mix of healthcare experience and technology knowledge, understanding how to prioritize efforts to achieve the desired outcomes related to remarkable patient experiences. Experience as a Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO) within a large healthcare system, with a proven track record in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures (JV), and supporting integration processes. Must have previous EPIC experience.

  • Licensure/Certification: Physician with Board certification in Clinical Informatics and primary speciality. Must have/be able to obtain an unrestricted medical license in North Carolina.
