Overview

This position serves as the primary resource for technology engagement, communication, outreach, and adoption initiatives across Auburn University, primarily serving the Office of the Vice President and Chief Information Officer. The role helps faculty, staff, and students understand, embrace, and effectively use the University’s technology services and investments by connecting technology initiatives to institutional goals and user needs, driving user adoption in measurable ways.

Working closely with the Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO), Office of Information Technology (OIT) leaders, project teams, and campus partners, this position develops and executes strategies that build awareness, understanding, trust, and sustained adoption of technology services. The specialist translates complex technical initiatives into clear, meaningful, user-centered communications and engagement opportunities that help the University community understand why technology investments matter, how they support teaching, learning, research, and administration, and what is needed for successful implementation and adoption.

This position plays a critical role in driving user adoption and strengthening partnerships between OIT and the campus community through outreach, feedback gathering, executive engagement, and technology adoption planning. The successful candidate will help ensure technology investments deliver lasting value by becoming integrated into everyday institutional practices.

Through strategic communication, meaningful engagement, feedback, and change-support efforts, this role helps build trust, strengthen OIT’s partnership with the University community, and maximize the value and impact of Auburn University’s technology ecosystem.

AU Formal Title: Communications & Marketing Specialist II/III

This position is located in Auburn, Alabama and working onsite is a requirement of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements campus-wide technology engagement and adoption strategies that promote awareness, understanding, and effective use of University technology services, systems, and initiatives.

  • Partners with OIT leaders, project teams, and functional stakeholders to create adoption plans, communication campaigns, training support materials, and outreach activities that facilitate successful implementation of technology solutions.

  • Plans, coordinates, and executes strategic communications and engagement initiatives on behalf of the Office of the CIO to communicate priorities, technology investments, organizational decisions, and service impacts to faculty, staff, students, and campus leadership.

  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with campus partners to gather feedback, identify user needs and barriers to adoption, and incorporate stakeholder perspectives into technology planning, implementation, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Develops user-focused content and resources that translate technical concepts into clear, practical guidance, helping individuals understand the value, purpose, and effective use of technology services and solutions.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of technology communication, outreach, and adoption efforts through stakeholder feedback, participation metrics, and usage data, and recommends strategies to improve engagement and service utilization.

  • Coordinates outreach events, presentations, forums, demonstrations, and other engagement opportunities that strengthen partnerships between OIT and the University community while advancing institutional technology priorities.

Qualifications

Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field

Communications & Marketing Specialist I

  • Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience OR

  • Master's degree

Communications & Marketing Specialist II

  • Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of experience OR

  • Master's degree plus 2 years of experience

Scope of Experience: Experience in marketing and communications services to include print journalism

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting technology initiatives within a higher education environment.

  • Experience developing communication and adoption strategies for enterprise technology implementations.

  • Experience in change management, organizational effectiveness, user adoption, or customer success initiatives.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical audiences.

  • Experience facilitating presentations, workshops, stakeholder meetings, or community engagement activities.

  • Familiarity with technology project lifecycles and implementation methodologies.

  • Experience analyzing engagement metrics and using data to improve communication and adoption outcomes.
