Full job description

Join Cleveland Clinic's Martin South Hospital where research and surgery are advanced, technology is leading edge and caregivers are family. This 100-bed hospital provides top-quality care to the communities in and around Martin County. Here, you will work alongside passionate physicians, nurses and other caregivers in a family-oriented, supportive environment.

The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomists also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Very often the patient's only contact with the medical laboratory is the phlebotomist. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomist to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens.

Through this role, Cleveland Clinic provides education opportunities for development as well as tuition assistance after meeting the required employment time period. Here, you will get to be a part of a collaborative team that is empowered to uphold the quality, integrity and safety of each patient.

A PRN caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 10:00AM - 6:30PM, as needed. Martin South Hospital will be the primary work location, but floating to other sites may be required, as needed.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Collect blood, process specimens and perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.

  • Perform blood-collection-related techniques from patients of all age groups, such as blood glucose tolerance tests and blood cultures.

  • Prepare samples for testing and manage specimens in the laboratory information system.

  • Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.

  • Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • One year of college or equivalent

  • Six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing

Physical Requirements:

  • This position is primarily mobile in nature.

  • The average amount of lifting is 10 pounds with occasional carrying of objects up to 20 pounds.

  • Sitting for short periods of time, the ability to file, move records, laboratory supplies, perform venipuncture, and move charts also requires bending and stooping.

  • Communication by means of the spoken, written and typed word is required.

  • Work requires finger dexterity and eye hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.

  • Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

  • Special Demands: Use of personal protective equipment is required as there is a potential for exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents when drawing and processing specimens.

  • Confidentiality: The employee has access to the entire medical record for the purpose of charting and correcting laboratory results AND review of physician orders.

  • The access is limited to the amount reasonably necessary to achieve the purpose of the laboratory testing request.

  • The disclosure or requests that occur on a routine or recurring basis include patient demographics, condition and laboratory results.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
