Introduction

At IBM, work is more than a job - it's a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you've never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world's most challenging problems? If so, lets talk.

Your role and responsibilities

As an Experimental Research Scientist with IBM Quantum, you will play a key role in advancing the frontier of quantum computing by pushing the limits of today’s most sophisticated quantum hardware. You will develop and execute first-of-a-kind experimental demonstrations that extend the capabilities and performance of IBM’s quantum processors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement novel quantum hardware demonstrations, showcasing new capabilities that expand the reach of IBM’s quantum systems.

  • Collaborate closely with theorists, experimental physicists, and software engineers to design and execute groundbreaking, advantage-scale experiments.

  • Leverage advanced quantum technologies such as error mitigation, dynamic circuits, high-performance computing integrations, and quantum error correction.

  • Apply deep knowledge of device physics to optimize experimental performance and influence the design of next-generation quantum hardware.

  • Contribute to the advancement of the full quantum computing technology stack, ensuring that quantum computing becomes more usable, robust, and scalable.

  • Engage collaboratively within a research and development environment, participate in executive speaker sessions, and demonstrate strong problem‑solving and communication skills.

Required technical and professional expertise

  • At least 3 years of relevant research experience in experimental quantum computing, simulation, or control. Doctoral research experience may be included.

  • Proven record of research and accomplishment.

  • Programming experience (Python preferred).

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Strong understanding of superconducting qubit device physics or comparable quantum hardware architectures.

  • Experience using experimental techniques such as error mitigation, error suppression, quantum control.

  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals or top conference proceedings.

  • Familiarity with Git and/or Github.

  • Experience with Qiskit or similar quantum software development frameworks.
