Description

The College of Architecture at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time, tenured Professor to serve as Department Head for the Department of Construction Science and hold the Charles Dewey McMullan Endowed Chair in Construction Science with an 11-month academic appointment expected to begin Summer/Fall 2027. The candidate’s tenure review will follow the University’s Tenure Review Upon Hire (TRUH) process.

The Department Head of Construction Science provides strategic academic and administrative leadership to advance the department’s mission, vision, and long-term goals. The Department Head oversees faculty, staff, academic programs, research, industry and community engagement, departmental operations, and budget and resource management, while supporting continued growth and innovation, in alignment with college and university priorities. This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Architecture, and works collaboratively with other department heads, associate/assistant deans, and the broader college leadership as appropriate.

The ideal candidate should meet expectations for tenured faculty across teaching, research/scholarship, and service, and have a distinguished record of accomplishment and experience in academic leadership. Industry experience is preferred. Detailed expectations and qualifications of the department head are included below.

Academic Leadership & Administration

  • Provides visionary leadership for the department’s teaching, research, and service missions in alignment with college and university priorities.

  • Leads strategic academic planning, including high-quality educational programs, curriculum development, scheduling, assessment, and accreditation across undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Promotes excellence and innovation in teaching and research by supporting funding opportunities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and contributions to disciplinary knowledge and practice.

  • Leads faculty recruitment, development, evaluation, tenure and promotion, and workload processes in accordance with university and college policies, guidelines, and expectations.

  • Supports student recruitment, retention, success, and career development, and promotes a student-centered learning environment.

  • Monitors developments in the discipline and industry to inform departmental academic, research, and strategic priorities.

  • Provides strategic leadership and support for tenure-track, tenured, and academic professional track faculty, to advance excellence in construction education, scholarly productivity, and high-impact research.

Department Operations

  • Oversees the effective operation of the department, including, but not limited to, faculty, staff, and student affairs, workload assignments, performance evaluations, and departmental policies and processes.

  • Manages departmental budgets, facilities, space, equipment, and other resources to support academic and research missions.

  • Ensure compliance with university and college policies, professional standards, and applicable requirements.

Communication & External Relations

  • Maintains open communication with faculty, staff, students, and college leadership regarding departmental initiatives and contributions

  • Represents the department in college and university activities and collaborates with institutional partners to advance departmental missions and goals.

  • Strengthen industry engagement by developing strategic research, educational, and practice-based partnerships with the construction industry, in collaboration with the Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC).

While the leadership position involves primarily administrative responsibilities, the successful candidate must meet the following requirements as a tenured Professor.

Tenured Faculty Expectations

  • Maintains an active and high-impact research program, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and funded research.

  • Mentors graduate students and junior faculty, and supports departmental teaching across the programs.

  • Provides service to the institution and academic and professional communities.

  • Engages with external stakeholders and develops innovative partnerships to support teaching, research, and service missions of the department, college, and university.

About the Department of Construction Science:

The Department of Construction Science is one of the largest and most renowned programs in construction higher education. The Department offers STEM degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. The undergraduate program in Construction Science has been continuously accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) since 1978. In 2012, the master’s program in Construction Management became one of the first graduate programs accredited by ACCE.

Recently, the Department has significantly expanded its academic portfolio. The bachelor’s program now enrolls students at the Higher Education Center at McAllen. The master’s program includes an online delivery. Its doctoral program, approved in 2021, is the first in Texas and offers three concentration areas; i) construction management and safety, ii) smart construction, and iii) sustainable construction to meet the rapid changes and demands of the construction industry and academia.

As of Fall 2026, the Department has (1) a student population composed of 1,358 undergraduate students, 143 master’s students, and 52 Ph.D. students; (2) over 70 faculty and staff members; (3) a Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), composed of over 350 firms from various AEC/FM domains; and (4) eight endowed professorships. Each year, the Department awards more than $500,000 in scholarships through the support of its partners and conducts the largest department-level career fair at Texas A&M University. Its annual research expenditure exceeds $5 million, and all its Ph.D. students are fully funded.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree (e.g., Juris Doctor) in Construction Science or closely related field.

  • A record of excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service with credentials and accomplishments that merit appointment as a Professor with tenure.

  • Extensive experience in managing an academic unit and leading strategic initiatives to advance departmental teaching, research, and service missions.

  • Financial management experience, including revenue, expenditure, budgeting, and/or fundraising.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction means and methods, project delivery, project controls, safety, and project management.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with construction industry professionals, employers, alumni, and professional organizations to support the academic mission of the Department.

  • Significant experience leveraging industry partnerships to enhance student learning, internships and career opportunities, applied research, workforce development, professional education, and/or philanthropic support.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant professional experience in the construction industry, working with contractors, owners, developers, design professionals, and other individuals or organizations directly engaged in the delivery of construction projects.

  • Extensive knowledge about current and emerging industry trends, technologies, standards, regulations, and workforce needs, and their implications for disciplinary and interdisciplinary education and research.

  • Experience building relationships with industry leaders to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
