THIS IS A LIMITED-TERM REGULAR FULL-TIME POSITION. SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE CAN BE EMPLOYED UP TO TWO YEARS, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ONE ADDITIONAL YEAR, BASED ON THE ORGANIZATIONS' NEEDS .

Health Physics Equipment Technician I role is central to ensuring the safe and effective operation of health physics instrumentation. This position involves performing precise calibration, functional testing, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on a diverse range of health physics equipment, guaranteeing their accuracy and reliability. A key aspect of the role includes meticulously maintaining calibration records and actively contributing to the development of new calibration methods. Furthermore, the Technician I will play a vital part in assisting with the evaluation and recommendation of new health physics equipment to continuously enhance the capabilities of the department

Responsiblities

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists in the calibration, functional testing, troubleshooting, and repair of health physics and radiation detection instrumentation.

  • Assists in conducting routine performance checks using approved calibration sources and test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.

  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of detailed calibration records, test data, and maintenance logs.

  • Assists engineers and health physicists in gathering data to evaluate instrumentation performance and define technical requirements.

  • May support studies and technical research by gathering data for health physics assessments, equipment selection, and system improvements.

  • Provide support to Nuclear or High Hazard (HH) facilities by helping to ensure radiation detection equipment is maintained in a condition suitable for safe operations.

  • Assist in and operate specific test equipment, electronic diagnostic tools, and radiation detection systems necessary for a particular assignment.

  • Follow or develop checklists for specific equipment-related tasks such as calibration, testing, and maintenance of health physics instrumentation.

  • Assists in the review of technical drawings, schematics, and equipment documentation.

  • Ensures all work complies with applicable quality, configuration management, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Some vocational training preferred.

  • Some vocational training in electronics, instrumentation, or a related technical field is preferred.

  • Understanding of radiation detection principles, health physics concepts, and calibration methodologies (preferred but can be trained).

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.

  • Ability to work safely with radioactive calibration sources and in controlled radiological environments.

  • May be required to participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).

  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).

  • Work schedule will be 4/10's, Monday through Thursday (subject to change).

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Hourly range for this position is: $22.32 - $33.48.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
