Maloney Properties and Northgate Residents Ownership Corporation (NROC) is seeking candidates for a Community Builder position. This position cultivates and supports resident engagement and leadership for a unique, resident owned affordable rental community of 336 households in Burlington, VT. The Community Builder CB_ reports directly to the President of the NROC Board of Directors; however, day-to-day supervision is shared between Champlain Housing Trust (CHT), a non-profit provider of affordable housing, and Maloney Properties. The CB supports the corporate and governance functions of the Board, maintains the corporate records for optimal Board performance. The work hours are full-time, consisting of daily office hours as well as early evening and (less frequently Saturday) hours for residents’ meetings, events and general outreach. Ability to meet this schedule is essential to the job. Also open to qualified candidates seeking a schedule that is less than full time. Responsibilities include:

Resident Engagement and Communications

  • Engage with Northgate residents directly to foster their participation in site activities and governance. Recruit and support volunteers for Board-led projects, events and the on-site food-pantry.

  • Create engaging communications for residents via traditional (monthly print newsletter) as well as social media, with effective messaging about resident ownership and opportunities to participate in leadership through Board Service, along with general site information, news and upcoming events.

  • Orient new residents to Northgate’s history, the role of resident leadership, and the opportunities for participation.

  • Survey or otherwise assess residents’ needs, in conjunction with property management, to inform the Board’s decisions.

  • Seek additional outside funds for programs, projects and services as directed by the Board.

  • Lead on-site food pantry coordination, including maintaining relationships with food resource agencies, food pick up and staffing food pantry several days per month.

Support Board members and volunteers in staging community events such as Annual Meeting and supper and summer BBQ with administrative tasks of securing food, supplies, and facilitating outreach.

Governance and Leadership Development

  • Develop leadership capacities of the Board as a team as well as individual members through recruitment, ongoing training, and technical support.

  • Help the Board and Executive Committee develop yearly and longer-term work plans and periodically report to the Board against plan benchmarks.

  • Help the Board use its committee structure and other governance tools to develop a pipeline of strong resident leaders; provide resources to committees for leadership development.

  • Help the Board plan annual member meeting and any other governance-related events; work with property management staff to coordinate and staff all such events.

  • Organize and staff meetings of the Board and committees; prepare draft agendas, send out reminders and provide draft minutes to the Chairs for circulation.

  • Maintain corporate records, file corporate reports, tax forms, and update by-laws as needed.

External Outreach and Relations

  • With the Board, develop and implement a strategy to promote Northgate and NROC’s resident ownership to the public.

  • Actively support affordable housing locally, statewide and nationally, in particular supporting resident leadership and ownership of permanently affordable housing.

  • Build and maintain good relationships with Northgate’s housing funders and regulators.

Your Qualifications

  • Three or more years of relevant professional experience in board governance, community relations, social work, community organizing, nonprofit work, marketing, communications, direct service, resident leadership, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a people-focused approach and the ability to build trusting relationships across diverse communities.

  • Demonstrated experience working with low-income, economically challenged, or otherwise vulnerable communities, with a commitment to inclusive, resident-centered programming.

  • Strong community building, organizing, and facilitation skills.

  • Commitment to social justice, resident ownership, community-controlled housing, and permanently affordable housing models. Familiarity with Vermont’s nonprofit housing models is a plus.

  • Highly collaborative, adaptable, and proactive, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a complex community environment.

  • Creative and analytical problem solver with sound judgment, empathy, emotional intelligence, active listening skills, and a strong commitment to follow-through.

  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills, with careful attention to detail and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

  • Strong computer and technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft programs, PDF management, virtual meeting software, and the ability to learn new technology independently.

  • Knowledge of and experience with governing boards and principals, and awareness of governance best practices strongly preferred.

  • English fluency is required. Multi-language fluency is a strong plus.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required. Also required: Occasional travel within and outside Vermont for relevant trainings, meetings and conferences as directed. Travel costs are reimbursed.

  • Availability for regular evening and occasional weekend hours, for outreach to households with daytime jobs.
