Full job description
Product Designer Our mission Boom is on a mission to level the playing field for the 110+ million renters in the US by making housing more flexible, affordable, and rewarding. Boom is building a suite of rental financial services for renters and property managers, including tenant screening, rent payment reporting, rent reporting-as-a-service, and a number of integrations with the largest property management systems (PMS). Boom serves renters through the Boom App and property managers via the Boom Platform. Now serving thousands of renters, Boom is led by second-time founder Rob Whiting (ex-BCG, Rubicon). It's backed by investors such as Starting Line, Clocktower Ventures, Gilgamesh Ventures (Petal co-founders), and angels such as William Hockey and Zach Perret (Co-founders of Plaid) and Harry Stebbings. Boom has been profiled by Inman, Business Insider, HousingWire, and more. Opportunity You will own design for key parts of BoomScreen, Boom's tenant screening and applicant verification product. You'll work closely with product managers and engineers to turn user and business needs into intuitive, usable experiences, and report to [Product/Design lead - TBD]. You'll partner daily with engineering, product, and other designers, with regular exposure to leadership as you take on more ownership. You'll need to be comfortable working across wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI, and translating ambiguous problems into clear, usable flows. This role is a great fit for someone who wants to own design end to end at a fast-moving startup, work hand-in-hand with engineers to ship what they design, and build on our existing design system and component library. It's not a great fit for someone who wants to work in isolation from engineering, focus mainly on research, or hand off concepts without following through to implementation. This role is based in Austin alongside our product, design, and engineering team. What you'll do
-
Design intuitive experiences across BoomScreen's web and mobile products, from applicant-facing screening flows to internal tools used by property managers
-
Turn ambiguous problems into user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma
-
Partner closely with engineers from early concepts through implementation to make sure what ships matches the design
-
Incorporate feedback from product, engineering, and other stakeholders into design revisions
-
Work within and help evolve Boom's design system, reusing and extending frontend components rather than reinventing patterns
-
Take ownership of assigned design work, surface problems, and propose solutions
-
Share work early and often for feedback from the team
What you'll need
-
2+ years of experience in product/UX design, ideally on digital products with both web and mobile surfaces
-
Strong proficiency with Figma
-
Solid grounding in user flows, wireframing, prototyping, and usability feedback
-
Experience working directly with engineers to take designs from concept to shipped product
-
Understanding of design systems and how to design within (and extend) a component library
-
Strong communication skills, including explaining design decisions and taking feedback from stakeholders
-
Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-moving startup environment
-
A portfolio link with your application. In interviews, we'll ask you to walk us through one or two projects in depth, so pick examples you know well
Nice to haves
-
Experience at an early-stage startup
-
Experience designing for fintech, proptech, or other regulated products
-
Basic technical fluency - comfortable discussing APIs and frontend/backend constraints with engineers
-
Experience contributing to or maintaining a design system
-
Familiarity with tools like Jira and PostHog
Benefits of working at Boom
-
Competitive salary with stock options
-
Full healthcare coverage (health, dental, vision) including 50% coverage for dependents
-
15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year + 5 sick days + all US federal holidays (11 in total) (note: we think unlimited PTO is BS and causes some employees to feel guilty when they take it)
-
Company-issued laptop/MacBook
-
Company-sponsored training & development
-
Regular off-sites, retreats, and other company-sponsored events and travel opportunities
