Qualification and Requirements

• U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident (Green Card) status required to perform services under this federal contract

• Ability to read, write, and speak English well enough to communicate effectively with patients, families, and the care team; basic computer literacy required

• Active, current, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in any U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth

• Graduate of an accredited BSN, ADN, or diploma nursing program with successful completion of the NCLEX-RN

• Minimum of 1 year of RN experience in an outpatient clinic, ambulatory care, or primary care setting within the preceding 3 years

• ACLS certification preferred; ambulatory care nursing certification (AMB-BC) a plus

• Proficiency in patient intake and vital signs, nurse triage (in person and by phone), medication and immunization administration, IV therapy, and chronic disease management

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

• Must pass a test-based clinical competency assessment prior to submission and provide professional references with current contact information

• Ability to successfully complete a federal background investigation, fingerprinting, and Indian Health Service (IHS) credentialing package, including primary-source license verification

• Documented immunizations and TB screening; annual privacy, information security, and bloodborne pathogen training required

• Willingness to complete orientation and clinic training before beginning the assigned schedule

• Ability to work clinic hours, generally Monday through Friday day shifts, with occasional extended hours as scheduled

Responsibilities

• Perform patient intake, vital signs, and focused nursing assessments for scheduled and walk-in patients in the outpatient clinic and prioritize care based on acuity

• Recognize and respond to urgent or emergent changes in patient condition, initiating emergency protocols and stabilizing patients for transfer to a higher level of care when needed

• Administer medications, immunizations, injections, and IV therapy in accordance with provider orders and IHS policy

• Monitor vital signs and patient condition during visits and escalate changes to the clinic physician or advanced practice provider

• Coordinate referrals, specialty consults, diagnostic testing, and follow-up appointments, and provide thorough handoff communication to the care team

• Provide patient and family education on diagnoses, medications, preventive care, and chronic disease self-management

• Support patients experiencing behavioral health or substance use concerns using de-escalation and safety protocols and appropriate referrals

• Float to other clinics or departments within your competency and skill set when directed by nursing leadership

• Document care accurately and in real time in the IHS electronic health record (RPMS/EHR) and communicate patient status changes during shift report

• Comply with IHS and Joint Commission standards, infection control and safety policies, HIPAA and the Privacy Act, and all facility rules and procedures

• Complete required orientation, annual training, and competency validations and report to work as scheduled, including during emergencies or adverse weather
