Job Duties
Position Summary
This position is responsible for demonstrating proficiency and excellence in skills commensurate with the maximum allowances within the scope of licensure; maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of patient care in the practice; and optimally developing an optometric practice within the medical/surgical practice.
Optometrist Essential Functions
-
Provides high quality, efficient, independent patient examinations within the scope of licensure.

Documents findings accurately and succinctly in EHR
-
Orders medically necessary and appropriate tests following the orders protocol; Testing is interpreted within 24 hours of completion of test with appropriate patient notification
-
Appropriately refers patients when necessary treatment is outside scope or when second opinion is warranted
-
Provides patients with contact lens exams and/or fittings when necessary
-
Refers all patients in need of contact lenses, glasses or other eye related supplies to AEC optical for purchase; Supports optical and understands the quality products offered there
-
Appropriately bills for examinations based on supported findings and documentation; Welcomes feedback from internal billing office and outside consultants when coding changes occur

Works with clinical team to see patients efficiently including working up patients on their own if the technicians are running behind

Excellent communication skills with clinical co-workers, support staff, referring providers, on-call providers; Promptly answers emails and tasks from internal and external points of contact.

Excellent communication skills with patients from all backgrounds; Able to communicate concerns, treatment plans, and follow-up needed in concise but friendly manner

Respects and supports external co-management of the medical/surgical patients according to state law and the by-laws of the practice

Welcomes urgent or emergent patients onto schedule

Provides post operative care to variety surgical patients from retinal, glaucoma, cataract, LASIK and corneal surgeries

Participates in rotating call schedule as needed by the practice.

Builds commitment in others at all levels to support the organizations strategic goals, positive culture and company values

Communicates concerns respectfully, recognizing that there may be an alternative solution; Open to feedback, ideas, and new ways of thinking to solve new problems
Other Essential Functions

Must be willing and able to work a variety of hours and work in the various locations as needed

Participates in department and company meetings, as requested

Assists in training and onboarding of new ODs, technicians and scribes

Provides educational opportunities for in-house employees in all departments based on need.

Minimum Education Required
Education & Licensing

Graduate of accredited optometry program
-
Licensed optometrist in the state(s) required
Minimum Experience Required
Experience
- One year fellowship experience preferred; Two years’ experience in ophthalmology setting would be considered in lieu of fellowship
Skills & Knowledge Required

Provider of highest quality patient eye care

Demonstrated ability to work with patients and staff of all ages and backgrounds
-
Demonstrated computer literacy, especially EHR literacy
-
Ability to meet or exceed patient volume requirements

Understands and appreciates unique dynamic in practice with both optometry and ophthalmology
-
Ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines when faced with multiple interruptions and sometimes stressful situations
-
Can confidently establish priorities based on workload, focusing on attention to detail and accuracy
-
Capacity to analyze and problem-solve issues to identify areas of process improvement and increase efficiencies
-
Able to work independently and handle and resolve problems on own, but also know when to collaborate with staff and be a team player
-
Ability to assess the importance and relevance of information and effectively and efficiently share information and relevant detail to the appropriate persons

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to develop and foster relationships with employees and clients at all levels of the organization; ability to give consistent and concise direction/communication to team members; ability to lead, motivate, educate, manage and train teams

Ability to operate successfully with strategic and tactical level issues and to effectively manage multiple and diverse issues; good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions based on data and business acumen

Courteous and professional demeanor while demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to company vision and mission

Ability to maintain confidentiality utilizing HIPAA guidelines and maintain compliance with OSHA rules

Advanced computer skills, including Word and Excel and a willingness to learn new software programs
