Full job description

For more than 30 years, Hildebrand has been solely focused on housing families experiencing homelessness throughout greater Boston. Over that time, we've established a strong reputation for reliability and consistency based on our proven theory of change, while remaining flexible to meet the changing needs of our communities. What sets us apart is the lengths we go to in getting to know our family members and their goals as they work to achieve self-sufficiency.

We are looking for people to partner with us to achieve our goal of disrupting the cycle of homelessness for greater Boston families and are seeking a Director of Finance to join our team.

What You Will Do:

Financial Management, Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Lead the transition of the organization’s financial management via its current GL system to a new enterprise system (ERP).

  • Lead and ensure the execution of all accounting functions for the organization, including the month- and year-end close process, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and overall general ledger maintenance.

  • Administer the general ledger/ERP, payment processing, and expense applications (e.g., Blackbaud, Sage Intacct, RAMP, and Bill.com).

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB standards, and nonprofit-specific financial reporting requirements, including functional expense allocations and restricted funds tracking.

  • Manage treasury functions including cash management, banking relationships, investment oversight, and cash flow forecasting.

  • Formulate, recommend, and implement sound fiscal policies, procedures, and controls, including oversight of internal control compliance and related financial and internal control systems.

  • Evaluate and propose recommendations for process and system improvement, inclusive of interoperability of Accounting/Finance and other department platforms.

  • Serve as the organization’s leader with external auditors for tax preparation and audit, including the annual financial audit and preparation of organizational filings (including Form 990, Form 990T, Form 1099, and the MA UFR).

Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategic Planning

  • Prepare timely and accurate internal and external financial reports, including monthly and quarterly financials, cash flow forecasts (Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Statement of Cash Flows, etc.), and ad hoc financial reports for Senior Management.

  • Provide strategic insights and financial analysis to support organizational planning, program evaluation, fundraising efforts, and long-term sustainability.

  • Act as the primary accounting liaison and strategic partner for all finance and organizational system implementations and upgrades.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise, develop, and mentor a dedicated finance team (currently two direct reports).

  • Demonstrate leadership by promoting a positive working environment with transparent communication and shared vision.

  • Collaborate across departments to promote clear and effective communication and ensure fiscal alignment with programmatic goals

What You Will Need to Bring:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Current or previous CPA licensure strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership/supervisory capacity.

  • Prior experience in education, nonprofit, or mission-based environments strongly preferred.

  • Expert understanding of GAAP, fund accounting, and financial reporting requirements.

  • Strong financial forecasting and analytical skills.

  • Mastery of accounting, Accounts Payable (AP), and spend/expense management applications (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Blackbaud, Bill.com, RAMP, Expensify, etc.).

  • Mastery of MS Office 365 applications; proficiency with Google Workspace is a plus.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, service-oriented environment.
